what is wrong with them???

I don't see anything wrong with them. They're respectful. They help the family heal.

I think that they're good reminders that people can get killed when driving in those locations.

Always found it difficult to take that interpretation when the road was flat and straight and going between two level cornfields,,,

I'm not usually driving around cornfields. lol

what is wrong with them???

they create a hazard for the mowers

and they are on proberty not owned by the erector usually

and they are a distraction to drivers possibly

How does it create a hazard for the mowers? They drive around them. They're not that big.

When they go wide to avoid them, they get hit by trucks,,,
thereby creating another memorial

A friend of mine was a firefighter. He died on the job. People started making a memorial at the building where he died. My child drew a picture for our friend. They included a bouquet of flowers and a photo of themselves. We did this out of sadness and respect for our friend. He died in that building.

Nobody has died in my area doing that. Have you heard of it happening before?

By the way, in the movies when somebody is on life support...they just lay there still.....in real life it's much different.

This I know is true. It is tough to see. flowerforyou

I think this was just a way to get people to read your profile, which I did. There was nothing in there about road-side memorials.

However, since I paid the cost of entry:
- it was too long
- it was condescending to potential dates at the beginning (really, you're going to expand their universe, but they aren't going to expandd yours?)
- real intelligence reveals itself in a person's speech, writing, and actions; and boasting doesn't help convince anyone
- It was repetitive and not really well organized
- there wasn't anything in there that was remotely funny (where's the giggle factor?) laugh

JMHO

I think roadside memorials are a good thing. I use them to explain to my children what can happen if you treat a car like a video game or yourself like you are invincible, but most importantly how easy it is to carelessly take another human life. Now if that isn't important, I don't know what is.

Thanks for the thought provoking post. Now you owe me, so read my profile.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmm well I read his profile as well and rather enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. And if you actually looked at what he does for a living then you would have understood that he is on the road on a daily basis and sees these Memorial's on the side of the road as well.

Yes it is a sad reminder to some that have lost loved ones by and accident but.........at times it is also a reminder to those to slow down and keep your eye on the road.

As far as Memorial's on the side of the roads in Texas you will not see them that often. Due to when they do mow they may leave the new ones up till the next time but after that they will take them down.

I do understand why some feel the need to erect them but I also see that they could be very distracting at times as well.

But I must say at least he created a thread that was thought provoking...

This past fall, there was a house fire on the west side of town. Many years ago, I had a friend who lived in this same house for a time, and it was a firetrap even back then. Apparently, it was started by an electrical problem (big surprise there -- I'm willing to bet that old dump still had knob-and-tube wiring in it). Three young children, all of single-digit age, perished in that fire.

The remains of the house have since been razed, but the memorials that people have left still remain -- including teddy bears -- and are frequently either added to or replaced. I would not deny those children memorials to be put there for any reason. It's a haunting reminder, but a poignant remembrance as well.

I've used them to explain things to my child too. I explain how people need to be careful when they drive. I explain how drinking and driving are bad too.
