That's what they're trying to figure out. The trains don't need human conductors, they're completely computerized. However, in case of a computer failure, they all have conductors on board, supposedly to prevent things like this from happening. There was one train in the station, one stopped waiting to go into the station and the third which was running way too fast. Why it was going so fast and why the conductor didn't stop it, right now, is what they don't know.

Well, I just read that the train that hit the other one is the oldest model, it doesn't have data recorders the way the new models do. And, the conductor was killed. So, we may never know what really happened or why?

No, they'll know that, they'll run tests at the autopsy. There's a big article in the Post about how this could've happened, especially since it is supposed to have so many checks that accidents like this will never happen. Well, I say never say never, nothing's impossible.

Last couple of crashes (not on Metro) were because the conductors were texting and/or talking on their cell phones.

Especially texting, I'm sorry but you cannot pay attention to where you're going and what's happening around you if you're staring at your phone/blackberry or whatever. I know I cannot text and drive, I've tried it, it's not pretty.
