There are times I'll write a very brief e-mail to gauge interest. Why should I spend a lot of time composing a literate and witty e-mail if there's a good chance I will not get a response?

If you read the whole thread, I don't think any of us were asking for much. Just something that shows they read our profiles. Lilith even gave an example .

Read the whole thread???? noway

After all this time you should know I have a very short attention span. laugh

My sentiments exactly.

And wasn't this site once called "JUSTSAYHI"?

Clever!

C'mon, wouldn't you prefer and opening email with a bit of sass? You know those emails stand apart and have a better chance of garnering a reply.

P.S. Nice to see you, Jimmy flowerforyou

Hi toots,

Hmmmm...Now I'm trying to remember what I said when I emailed you. I did email you, didn't I?

I don't really understand why sending first emails is so difficult for some people. I often get emails that say "hi" and that's it. I wonder why some people think that's going to get a good response.

I just got an email like that, so I responded with hi. Then the person asked how the weather was. I just don't get how that is supposed to be interesting conversation.

The only ones I get are from people wanting to argue about my profile. "You're wrong," they say. When that's ALL they say, I wonder if the whole profile is wrong or if they're just referring to particular portions of it.

I gave up on sending out first e-mails ages ago -- didn't matter how well-written, amusing, relevant, or properly phrased it was, I never got a reply.

Don't worry, I had to look too. I found it like 20 pages back. 12 days ago.

I just got one of those. Worked to get a reply from me. Though my reply probably won't get much of one back, 'cept for maybe a big FU.

Yea. For the record, it was 3 sentences and one was a run-on.

Yes, but your subsequent replies improved, so don't beat yourself up. laugh

Other than using crazy subject titles (it was talked about in some other post here). I try to find something in their profile or picture or their username to tease them, or at least mention something that I found interesting in their profile. I guess it can be tough when someone has a profile that just says..."if you want to know anything about me just ask". People who hate my sense of humor don't respond which is good cause we'd never get along in the first place.

I also tend to ask questions at the end so the person has something to reply to. Stuff like if you were an animal what animal would you want to be or if you had a super power what would it be (I think these kinds of questions give you insight into a person's personality). I'll also ask stuff like favorite drink, or type of food (so if we hit it off and decide to meet, I'll pick a restaurant that serves their favorite food). Just to show the person that I actually paid attention to what they said...novel idea huh?

I tend to drop a line if they have an animal in there. Ask a question or verify the animal, like gayfifer and his Borzoi. :-). Since I'm looking for some who knows and has horses, it helps if they post a pic of the horse.

 A comment on something in a profile and a question or two works well. I think some people are under the impression they need to write something long, then when they don't get the responses they want, they think they're wasting their time.

I think it helps when people put something in their profile that makes it easy for someone to approach you. For example, in my profile, I say that one of three statements is true and ask if they can guess? It has given several people an icebreaker for talking to me.

There is plenty in my profile for someone to be able to comment on. However, that requires them to actually read it first .

Some folks here only log on when they have mail, so if profile says
"Last seen over a month ago" could mean no one has sent mail, but they will log back on when they get some, the point being maybe send them one anyway, they might just be waiting for YOUhappy
