....you pay big money to go to a salon to sit back, relax, and have your nails done. Just pretend you're going to a salon for your back. Lie back, pull the disk off the nerve, and feel better.

i like kyle's idea. also,
i bought an inverted table, that has helped me, with varying degrees of tilt. start out slow then work toward steep, and investment in a table a good one, is about $150 to $250 but worth it.
dislocated hip and s1 s2 L4 L5 nerves going nuts too.
i was in a wheelchair from that 3years ago, then limping with a cane, then just limping, now im back to normal and in the gym everyday...just my experience, not suggesting anything.

The only thing that I can think of is to looking into massage, pressure points, yoga and accupuncture.

Hot and cold might help but I doubt it.

ohwell

I know it's gotta suck! My grammy has problems sometimes. My hips do funky things every once in a while from having kido. but I can't imagine what you are going through! flowerforyou

That nerve is the diameter of your thumb and runs most of the length of your body. They get pinched in buttocks and spinal areas. I'd go to your local chiropractor. Tell em you don't need a physical or an assessment and that you'd just like a traction session- 16 to 20% of your weight for an hour to get a disk off your sciatic nerve. Should be 40 to 60 dollars. And covered under insurance. This is your best bet. And yes- you can tell I've been there. Broken back- 6 months traction- in 2000.

Longhair is on it pretty good,,,
you also have this route,,,
Go to a chiro for the initial free consult. He will take Xrays to show you how "fuhked up" you are skeletonwise,,, to get you to come back but there's an advantage. When he shows you the misalignment in your hip area (front or back view showing the lower part of the spine in contrast to the pelvis), you will be bale to see that the spine is also a little curved and offset.

I would lay on the side that is away from the curve and use a pillow between the legs to elevate the opposite leg,,, I know, it sounds a little messed up but has worked for me when I was in severe pain.
You might also give yourself a brutally honest assessment of your bed too,,,

and as for chiropractors,,,
I have only seen one that one time. I did like the rolling bar table and heat and the electro stimulation. I had her crank it up all the way. My problem was that after that visit, I had a pain in my neck that I had never had and still have to a small extent today,,, I'll eventually work it out though.
Others swear by them though...

I had a back injury 20 yrs ago with that nerve being pinched. If I over do it now, it will crank back up again. Watch lifting! That is my biggest advice. If heat after a few days doesn't help, go get some pain meds. I ended up in the e.r. a couple of months ago because I could not move....literally.

Anti inflammatory meds if you have them, are a huge help.

I went to a chiro ONE time. She seemed to be under the belief that she could actually move my 5th lumbar back in line and off of that nerve with no surgery. surprised She just about killed me.

Having lifelong back problems I feel for you. I highly recommend a chiropractor-just like Kyle. Find one that offers a chinese technique that isn't as jarring if you fear being jolted. The chiropractor should be massaging areas before he attempts to manipulate if he is thorough.

As far as heat or ice, you need ice. The area is probably inflamed. Once the area isn't as inflamed, then alternate ice and heat at intervals. It stimulates the area to mend. I know the heat feels good but it's not a good idea when inflamed. If you go to a back clinic they always use ice first.

Stretch as best you can through the pain and hold the position. Any medication to reduce the inflammation can help. Seriously consider changing your mattress. I now have a memory foam mattress that helps since it contours to the crazy curves in my back. The memory foam pillow works great if you tend to be tense in the neck and shoulders. I know it hurts like hell, but attempt to try and walk a little to keep things moving. Afterward, lay down and ice up again.

They fixed me. They got my sciatic nerve out of the way of the healing disk. I can walk again.

my doctor told me to stay away from chiropracters

but thats because I have a spinal fusion (removed the discs and fused the vertebrae together to make one long bone)

My ex-husband had that done on his lower back and it was very successful. He didn't seem to have any back problems after that except for occasional stiffness.

biggrin Thank you very much for looking up that info... You may be surprised to know that I have never been to any kind of salon for hair, nails, etc...never been high maitenence...but it did put the cost into perspective...

And thank you all for the advice & tips...this has been an on & off thing since I broke my lower spine & diagnosed with a degenerative joint & bone disease at the age of 14. A lot of us here know that chronic pain is just a fact of life...you get used to it...but even a big ol Mama Bear like me can get knocked down on her ass every now & then... Thank you for your help...
