A lady wrote the best letter in the editorials in ages!!! It explains
things better than all the baloney you hear on TV.

Her point:
Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country
protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of
illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders,
might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay
indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me
in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the
laundry and swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't like to
do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your
house).

According to the protesters:

You are Required to let me stay in your house.

You are Required to add me to your family's insurance
plan.

You are Required to Educate my kids.

You are Required to Provide other benefits to me and to my family (my
husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working
and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends
who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be
there. It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I
do, and I'm just trying to better myself.

I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did
break into your house.

And what a deal it is for me!

I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my
keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of
cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.

Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE so you can communicate with
me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America.....if you
agree, pass it on (in English). Share it if you see the value of it.

If not blow it off.........along with your future Social Security funds,
and a lot of other things.

You won't need to break into my house..the door is always open, and if
you make my bed and do my dishes I will kiss you.

Teach me your language? ok...if I can get my aussie tongue around
it...cool..I may sound a little weird..

I have to disagree, seeing that half the population in the US is
functionally illiterate. I'm serious. I had to call the manager at
Wal-Mart about a disagreement, and she seemed to me to be a middle class
caucasian woman, and even she could not say one sentence that was
gramatically correct. Not to mention the misspellings and punctuation
errors you see where ever you go, and the internet, forget it. My
ex-husband made over $65,000/year and could not write a sentence that
had correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I think people need to
spend more time looking at themselves instead of pointing their fingers
and saying, "No, *you* learn English!" Why don't they learn it first
themselves?

And I think this belongs on the politics board, not general discussion.

I would like to see people working to include everyone, not get worked
up and self-rightious about excluding people. And who was it again who
invited us to this country to begin with?

i also disagree...it's not congruent at all. for one thing, do we
really own land? can you call land a possession? do we even have a
right to?

i was born here...by the luck of the draw. i did absolutely nothing to
deserve that birth, and neither did they.

and america has always been multicultural...and we don't HAVE an
official language. besides, language skills are a brain booster.

So what you're saying is your citizenship is meaningless, you were born
here "by the luck of the draw" and we should just totally open the
borders, let anyone who wants to come in do so?

I don't think you need to pick on people because they don't speak
English. Who was it in your family who first came to this country? Did
they speak fluent English? My family spoke german, romanian, and
spanish. And you know, it doesn't have to be an all or nothing proposal,
open borders or slammed shut. That is the fault in your argument.
There's nothing in there that allows for moderation. In the time it took
the author to write that "editorial," maybe she could have actually done
some good in this world instead of rallying people one side against the
other. That doesn't help anyone.

Who said anything about the borders being shut? We have immigration laws
and plenty of people come to this country and become citizens LEGALLY!
You're the one missing the point of the article since it means ILLEGALS,
those who "break in" illegally and then expect the same rights as those
who follow the rules. As for the language thing, my ancestors and others
who came here before LEGALLY learned the prevailing language and adopted
this country as it adopted them. The article is complaining about the
illegals (and there are others besides Mexicans) coming here and
demanding that the environment (meaning this country) adapt to them and
not them adapting to the environment. The fact is they've broken the law
just by being here (breaking into the house) and now they expect all the
rights of the homeowners, the citizens who followed the rules to become
so or who's ancestors did but they only want the rules that suit them to
apply.

I have nothing against someone coming to this country to better their
lives as long as they do it LEGALLY. The only problem I have with
Immigration period is that until they become legal citizens, which takes
like 5+ years, they dont' have to pay taxes. Now THAT pi$$es me off! I
don't care who comes here from where LEGALLY, I just think they should
have to either pay taxes too, or do away with them for everyone.

I can see giving them a 'tax break' for like...oh, maybe the first 2 or
3 months they are here to let them get settled on the money situation if
they are a low income family. Thats about the only reason I could see
that being even remotely fair...
