The box states it has a "patented food heater"

Probably a lot like MRE's do, chemical reaction inside a housing unit.

It's probably got some sort of chemical mix somewhere in the tray that will release an exergonic reaction (uses oxygen, which creates heat) to cook the food.

I'd still rather just use a microwave, though. laugh

So... those chemicals are in your stomach after you eat it... so...

Got Tums?

Yeah the chemicals you both mentioned are somewhat of a diet encourager for me... sick

No- the chems are probably either in the tray in some manner, or there's a kind of heating pack you put the tray of food on to cook it. You don't actually ingest the heating chems as they'd more-than-likely... uh... kill you. laugh

Like I said, they are in a housing unit. MRE's use to come in a little green/brown bag that looked a lot like a small pouch. Now they come in a filmy looking white bag, none of the chemicals are "supposed" to get out...if they do, your food is effectively ruined...and in the armed forces...you still have to eat it in all of its terrible tasting glory.

There is a little baggie that you place the sealed food tray in then pour water in the baggie... the baggie has a chemical pouch inside that reacts to the water and heats up but the food is otherwise unharmed.

The Food inside is pretty bland, generally over cooked and loaded with preservatives so you have to season it or it wont go down so well.

I only eat these when I am at a rest area or out in the boonies where I cannot get to a restaurant... My main issue is that I have not been able to justify buying a 2500 WATT power inverter to run a Microwave in my truck... er until recently when someone pointed out my lack of "fast" brewing coffee...(another topic all together)

That food was harmed when it left the factory, sealed baggie or none. Adding a little catalyst contamination couldn't hurt it much worse.

Ahhhh I was wondering why you'd subject yourself to that... I wouldn't waste the money on a microwave for the truck I don't think.. I'd probably just keep easy to make stuff for those times.. pbj, etc....

Wow! That's a strong inverter. I have a 150w that I use for my laptop and both cell phones. Would one of those coffee maker/toaster oven/cook tops (used in dorms mostly) use less power? They only make about 4 cups of coffee at a time, but are not much bigger than a regular toaster oven and you can cook eggs or other small items on the top.

I have a cooler that plugs in to my lighter outlet and keep fruits and nuts in it to snack on while on the road.

This truck will be paid for in January and I was planning on hiring a team to run it...

2500 Watts would also power a fridge(I have a 12v cooler now), LCD/DVD Satellite(have the laptop now), Coffee maker(12v 12 cup pot takes an hour and a half almost) and a Microwave.

it is tough to make a truck into a home, but when you are on long haul 16 weeks at a time you tend to miss the simple things like 110 volts from the wall... LOL
