They played

Safety in a cold world
Steady ground in an earthquake
Daddy has always been here;
Physical therapy, birthday’s, holidays
Nothing he ever missed
When a fever claimed her little brow
He was the one to make it better;
When the time was right, he told her the truth
There was another man
Back when she was not even two
He dried all the tears that fell
And promised he loved her just the same
Years passed
Graduation was here and gone
The other man never spoke a word
Probably the booze is still his first love
No sense of loss lingers
Daddy has always been here
