the number is familiar
i see it occasionally
my past wants me
and sometimes i answer
the voice is familiar
the very timbre
makes my heart race
brings back memories, vivid
"what if's" saturate
all sides of the conversation
what if, indeed
the talk turns again
talk of fantasies and wishes
never to come true
the goodbye is familiar
and no matter what
no matter how good
the day has been
a void within
grows wider each time
and i feel the loss
of something lost
so long ago, i barely remember
the loss is familiar
the emptiness painful
but when the call comes again
i'll probably answer
