My indifference was my last hope
Wish it could fool him today
A magician of words he was,
The story on my face long wiped out

His question was brief, My answer timeless
“Miss her”? His voice probed.
“No I do not”, I put ice to shame.
His acerbic laughter shredded my claim.

Hidden behind the blanket of the night,
I repeated my words emphatically..
Only to be betrayed by the sleeping moon…
As it rose from behind the dark smoke.

In the silver mirror of the lake,
The tears on my face sparkled bright
As I sat there helpless and exposed
And he silently vanished in the moonlight

Leaving his contempt and the moon behind
