two weeks ago my angel fish laid eggs and had babies but I was not expecting that at all. The fish were just getting big enough to be sexually active. The day I realized they had their first batch I found all the other fish in the tank hiding from the parents. Three days later the parents ate the babies because my fish were moved to another tank. I was mad I lost the first batch but then a little over a week ago they laid another clutch and this time the babies just became free swimming. I harvested them and put them in a brooding tank. I have over a hundred babies and at $2 a piece when I rear them to the size of a quarter it means that however many babies I have as long as I don't have a wipe out will make me money for a change. I feel like a fish match maker. I used to breed fish and this time it was not my intention. The fish were rescued from a tank being thrown away. needless to say the parents were not happy but then again I was not letting them eat this batch.

It kind of reminds me when I was accidentally breeding Convict Chiclids. I used to have SO many of them I was using them for feeder fish and my predators refused to eat them eventually because I had so many of them. Even the wholesaler I dealt with at the time had so many of them from me they could not get rid of them fast enough. If the economy wasn't so trashed i actually thought about getting back into breeding but this time I want to do it in a pay to view aquarium complex like a mini sea world.

Ah to dream...

I used to accidentally breed fish without trying and this is one of those times. What is funny is it is not that easy to get fish to do their thing. It is a lot more involved then tossing fish in a tank and expecting them to get busy.

Mom had a really agressive spotted lyretail mollie one time, that she passed to me, as it (he) would attack anything. I found a black one and tossed it the tank, and found babies a while later. so, I sent the babies back to her tank. He was much nicer after getting himself some! LOL

I've had angle fish lay eggs numerous times, it's tiring to watch them as they lay the eggs and then fan them with water, only to eat the young (or the eggs).
