To me it means coming up with new solutions to problems. I guess knowing that there are more than the traditional ways of thinking when problem solving.

The first thing that comes to mind is that I have to first define the 'box'. Once you know what your 'box' is, then you can begin to think outside of it. The more, I think about it, the more I realize I don't even know what my 'box' is.

Anyway, to me, the essence of the 'box mentality' means considering points of views and ideas that you may not think of as your own.

That is pretty much it. Thinking the way you were trained to think is called Linear thought or linear problem solving. Thinking outside the box is thinking in a way you were not taught to solve a problem from a perspective that gives a completely unique solution. Lateral, hence sideways thinking. Out of the box thinking is lateral problem solving. Historically the US has been the best at it. It was called Yankee Ingenuity.

to me thinking outside the box means takeing what is considered normal and maxing it out. For instance.......it is normal for a lady to lay underneath a tree in the park....think outside the box and climb the freggin tree. Thinking outside the box is not watching the river roll by but jumping in and rolling with it. It is continueing the story even after you have finished the book. flowerforyou

I like to think I do, and I've seen trace evidence of a few other people doing it, too, although I might be misconstruing the data.

For the most part, thinking outside the box has gone the way of the noble stegosaurus.

To me, it means living the life one wishes to live, not the life that everyone else wants you to live, not the life that depends entirely on tradition and inertia to proliferate itself, generation after generation, ad infinitum, to the end of time.

In order to live and think outside the box, one must have the capacity to understand and question what's INSIDE the box -- and learn to ignore it, even to denounce it, if and when it becomes too stifling and restrictive to allow one to breathe freely....

I have always "lived outside the box"...not one of my friends do any of the things I do, especially at my age...check my profile and you will understand...

it relates to the curious phenomenon of how you always get your bestest ideas sitting in the bathroom. originally, a self-help
Gooroo made the comment that "you also have to learn to think
outside the box" - but the phrase got coopted by some second rate
business school types who turned it into a dumbass business
cliche/chestnut widely spouted by managerial nincompoops who really
would be better off just sitting in the bathroom!!
