I prefer charcoal, I can throw on some wood chips to give a good smoky taste to my bbq. And, yes, I can smell and taste propane.sick sick

You can get grills that do both now , but as for the question depends on what your cooking , I prefer charcoal for steaks and ribs , but for things like hotdogs ,it dont really matter to me

Charcoal...and weber makes the only grill that works and its a waste of money to buy anything else. That is due to being able to control the heat . Also...with a weber you can shut both the upper and lower dampners to completely smother the coals...that lets you use the same coals two or three times over.
Go to a BBQ cookoff and take a gas grill....they would laugh you out of the place. Cook anything on a gas grill and at the same time cook on a weber charcoal grill...if you cant tell the diff....OMG seek medical help... any inconvience with charcoal is well worth the extra effort.

BBQ KING....

Being a person who's eaten BBQ made possible by both gas AND charcoal grills, I think the preference is purely superficial.

Using charcoal is the more-traditional method of grilling, which has its benefits (particularly with regard to the use of specialty woods along with the charcoal for "improved flavor"), but (as some of the others have stated) such method can take longer to make.

Gas also has its own benefits, let alone being quicker to start up and all.

In the end, it's just a matter of what the BBQ'er prefers. One isn't necessarily better than the other- it's just preference.

I cheat, I'll use mesquite or hickory on one side of the gas grill, and no or very low heat on the side where the meat is. Shut the lid and let 'er smoke

I have both. When I have the time to put ribs on I use the charcoal but when I am in a hurry or don't want to heat the house up in the summer I use the gas grill a lot. Actually not a lot because I don't cook to much but my daughter does. lol

Charcoal (with wood chips!) is very hard to beat...however, I am currently a gas grill user. Can fire it up and have dinner with no fuss/no muss. I grill all year - even in the winter! I love not having pots and pans to scour as an added bonus!

I use mostly mesquite in my smoker pit but I start it with charcoal. I also use some oak because Ike blew down part of a tree in my yard.

I also have a gas grill that is used for steaks, chops, and burgers but these always come out better on the smoker pit if I already have a fire going (my smoker pit has a grill over the fire). It is just too much trouble to start a wood fire to make a couple of burgers.

I also have a Cameron indoor smoker which really works well with fish. You put wood sawdust in it and put it on the burner in the kitchen. Twenty minutes later you have the best smoked salmon you have ever tasted.
