I'm a member of IATSE Local 44, the union for below-the-line techs here in (what USED to be) Hollywood, and it's a complete joke.

In the last three years, we've experienced-

- A Business Agent election fraught with fraud, corruption, and no less than FOUR re-counts, that finally resulted in the election of a B.A. ...

-... that ALSO resulted in the elected B.A. being lead out of the union hall in handcuffs after being indicted on some corruption charges, racketeering, and black-listing charges.

- the Treasurer forfeited his post after he admitted to an improper relationship with one of the girls who work the front office. AT the union's expense, of course.

- the dolts who HAVEN'T been kicked out for corruption went on to negotiate our latest bargaining agreement, and managed to accept an increase in the minimum number of hours needed to qualify for medical benefits. The result? up to 40% of the union membership will not be able to make the hours for med bennies as a result, as there simply aren't enough shows out there to make sure everybody can qualify for hours.

And all this goes in addition to the usual forms of corruption, nepotism, and other crap that usually goes on at the IA. While I'm not against unions all together, I AM against the union I'm a part of.

UNIONS aren't worth a **** and haven't been for a long time... When they started they made sense to help the underclass be treated/paid fairly... It hasn't been that way since well I don't know when... I'm guess since before HOFFA....

They went from helping the little guy out to being as corrupt as the corporate types running the companies themselves. They're all about making sure people working for THEM are in position, whether it be in office or on the job. The others can go starve, as far as they're concerned.

I've been in my union for almost a decade, and I can say that they haven't done a DAMN thing for me other than liberate me of my $762-a-year dues. Complete horse-puckey.

yep that's about all they do.. unless you're a cashier or ups driver, then you're getting paid bucks with great benefits and you strike every couple of years...
