Has anybody ever broken a bone and had to wear a cast?
What did you do about itching? My daughter has two small fractures in her left forearm and had a cast put on today. The doctor told her not to shove anything in it, and she's been complaining for quite some time about itching. Any ideas? |

Paper,
When my daughter had that problem, I filled the sink with cold water and she played in it with her good hand. The sensation distracted her and she had fun playing in the water. |

We use to put a little sprinkle of gold bond powder around the edges. It seemed to ease the itching a little.
What color cast did she get? My kiddo had her school colors which were gold and black and the ortho. said it was the ugliest cast he ever saw! |

You've already seen the pic of me in a cast when I busted my ankle. Fortunately, it was one of those removable kind of walking casts.
As far as your kiddo goes, if there's enough room, she can try one of those back-scratcher thingees. |

Thanks guys (and gals)
I do have benedryl around the house; i'll give that a try. I don't think the powder will work since the itch is in the middle of the cast, about 6 inches from either side. Not sure about the water trick, but I think I'll keep a spray bottle beside me and if she keeps pestering me, I'll squirt her with it! She got blue. She wanted white but didn't realize the fibreglass came in white as well and thought she had to pick a colour. |

Buy some sharpies mom......she'll get to at least have fun letting her friends sign it.
I broke my ankle as a kid, and my brothers painted what looked like my cheerleading shoe on my walking cast. It was the coolest thing ever. That benedryl was a good idea! |

I WAS gonna stop at the dollar store to pick up sharpies and she looked at me and rolled her eyes and said that all the kids had them at school anyway. She came home with hardly an empty spot.
We had chili cheese dogs and blizzards at Dairy Queen instead. |

I was in a cast from my hip to my foot for 2 months. Grit your teeth and get a wire coat hanger.

Just wondering if the benedryl helped any ?

Thanks for your ^^^ concern.
She fell asleep before I even came back upstairs with the bottle. I'll certainly remember the next time she complains about itching though and let you know. |

My daughter had to have a bone graph and her tendon lengthened in the back of her leg. She was in a hard cast for 6 months. Bendadryl is the way to go. She was in a walking boot for 6 more months. That was easier but very painful. By the way $58,000 and two surgeries later it was unsuccessful. She still has severe problems with her foot and is deemed handicapped from it.

That's terrible...I hate that for anybody, but i especially hate it for a child. I have had walking casts before, when i broke both legs..but that was years ago. I resorted to the coat hanger..i just couldn't handle the itching. The thing back then, was wintergreen alcohol on the cotton and a blow drier..i was too impatient for that though. I suppose it may work for some people..but not on me. |

I broke my wrist a few years ago. I used to deal with the itching by shoving a pen up the cast - very technical! Make sure you keep it perfectly dry when she bathes.
