I dont think he was ever referred to as Emmanuel. That was the name he was supposed to be given in the prophecy but his mother named him Jesus instead. It was just that this part of the prophecy was not exactly accurate.

...Is Jesus' name "Immanuel" or "Jesus?"....

In Isaiah 7:14 the Bible gives a prophecy of the name of Jesus. It says, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel."1 If we go to Matt. 1:21, it says, "And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins." (See also, Matt. 1:25; Luke 1:31; 2:21). Is this a contradiction? No. It is not.

In ancient times names were often given as representations of the hopes and dreams of the parents or even of recognition of divine assistance. Names in the Old Testament had understandable meanings. For example: Abram means "exalted father," but Abraham means "Father of a multitude." Some names could even be translated into complete sentences as in Uzziel (‘God is my strength’ - Ex. 6:18), Adoniram (‘my lord is exalted’ - 1 Kings 4:6), and Ahimelek (‘my [divine] brother is king’ - 1 Sam. 21:1).2

So names are more descriptive in the Hebrew and Greek then they are in English. They often refer to the character, purpose, etc., of the one being named. The closest we come to understanding this is in Native American culture. We are familiar with such names as "Running Bear," or "Pretty Eagle, "or "White Owl" as names. These names meant something and were far more descriptive than "Bob," or "Tom," or "Sue."

When we come to Isaiah 7:14, we encounter a prophecy about the Messiah stating that his name will be Immanuel. Immanuel literally means "God is with us." This is a significant because Jesus is God in flesh:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God....and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us..." (John 1:1,14).

For in Him [Jesus] all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form" (Col. 2:9).

The Name Jesus
So, we can see that a prophecy of Jesus being "Immanuel" is dealing with him being God, the word, in flesh. This was fulfilled in the birth of Jesus when the Word, known as the Son, second person of the Trinity, became flesh. We call this the incarnation.

When it came time to name the Lord, an angel the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and told Joseph to call his new son "Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins" (Matt. 1:21). The word "Jesus" means "Jehovah is salvation." This is appropriate since Jesus is Jehovah, second person of the Trinity, who became flesh and is our salvation.

Well thanks for all of that but what Im confused on is the fact that "Emmanuel" is an actual male name. Its not an interpretive descriptive. And Jesus, of course, was called Jesus, and is not called Emmanuel in any other verse in the New Testament. But thank you so much for posting all of that.

Yes but nearly all names have a meaning of some kind. I think the issue here is that Jesus was in fact supposed to be named Emmanuel according to prophecy. He was not. You might also ask why did they not foretell his name to be Jesus? Or should we have been looking for an Emmanuel? What if Emmanuel was in the manger next door? Or maybe he got the last room at the inn?

I agree Emmanuel is a desciptive term not a literal name though it is commonly used now as a name. My friend and I are working on a guitar duet. We call our selves the minstrels. But my name is not Minstrel nor is his. Jesus is God with us but His name is Jesus. Actually Yeshua is His proper name.
He shall be called Emmanuel= He shall be called God with us.
That's what the bible is actually saying.
It's ammazing how we so esily over complicate that which is so simple.
OK I'm getting off of my soap box now. I hope I didn't come off too preachy it's just that biblical subject matter is an area where I've done a pretty fare amount of study.

Jesus was not operating in His divinity here on the earth. He came as a man because only a man could take back from satan the authority that was originally given to man. Jesus drew upon and was completely full of the grace of God. The bible defines grace, as God's ability working in our lives enabling us to do that which we cannot accomplish on our own.



Jesus death on the cross was neccesary so that not only could he take back authority on the earth, but also so he could go into hell and take the authority over death as well.

Prior to Jesus' death the enemy was operating in the power that was originally intended for man. But Jesus took back that power and now not only has power in heaven, but also power on earth and under the eart.



Again, Jesus was not operating while here on this earth in His divinity. The power He was using was a god-given power and that same power is available to those of us who house His Spirit. 1 John 4:17 says: "As He is, so are we, in this world"

That's why Jesus told us that the same works He does, so shall we do, and greater.



Exactly. It was for the joy that was set before Him that He endured the cross. Which is why we too can now live free from a fear of death and of hell.

Those of us who are aborn again, can indeed be like Jesus as He was on this earth. The same Spirit that raised Christ Jesus from the dead now dwells within us. Again, Grace!



Spiritual things can only be spiritually discerned.



You are so right. There is only one way. Jesus, said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.



Jesus grew in knowledge and in stature. He did't come out of the womb speaking Arabic and knowing Scripture. He went to the Father consitently for instructions. He said, I can only do that which I see the Father do. Everything Jesus did served a very powerful putpose. Far, far from meaningless.



He knew He was sent by God. He knew He had an assignment. He knew that He would have to forego His divinely power temporarily so that as a man, He could take back what was meant for man all along.



True Christianity is not a religion. It's a relationship. One definition of religion means "to seek". Those of who know who we are in Christ are no longer seeking for the truth. We know it. Some however seem to be searching and studying every religion on the planet in an attempt to fill a void that only the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob can fill.
