I sometimes when in line somewhere, wish they would'nt ask you how you are.
Because sometimes I feel like crap, and have had to smile thru gritted teeth just to say something nice.

We are supposed to ask, I don't usually...then I hear from my boss, but she isn't all that bad about it. Should come by my 7-11 sometime when I'm working, I won't ask.bigsmile

Yes I have. And you ever notice that the people who had a bad day wanna tell you all about it, while the people that are having a great day don't really talk about it all that much?

It's amazing how three words(how are you?)can turn into this long one-sided conversation that at the end makes you think wow-I really didn't want to know that.

Yes...I have some 'energy stealer' friends who if you ask, go for it and you leave drained after having a sh!t day listening to them..I just don't ask them anymore, just a quick 'hi' and I move on...

Yes, and sometimes I wish people wouldn't ask me how I/my day was.

In most situations, how are you today? or how was your day? is merely a cordial invitation to conversation. If your not prepared to dedicate interest, don't ask the question imho.
really its just an open ended excuse to complain, but does WONDERS for the person getting it off their chest, that someone cares enough to listen. Wether your after the illusion of caring, or truely care is up to you.
My variation upon this question is to make a bigger picture, was today better than yesterday? last week? 1 year ago? tomorrow? these questions might help to expand the conversation, and help identify what you can do to help change their 'days' for the better.

in my opinion don't spread your love out thin and fake to everyone you meet, concentrate it and be real.

that is a great response to this question i think all people should take the time to actually listen to someone friend relative or even someone you havent seen in months or years, because even if you listen for just 5 mins and have to make an excuse to leave, that 5 mins could really help someone :)
