A large fraction of those AIG bonuses were paid to employees not responsible for the part of the business that sunk the economy. To keep them from getting bonuses strikes at the very heart of contract law.


This is the irony to the situation. If the bonuses had not been awarded, every person eligible for one would have a field day in court with a civil non-performance claim. IIRC (law is not my business background so feel free to correct me here) if the issue had been taken to court, it is no longer a bonus and is now a court award, therefore requiring performance of the contract with little or no recourse to control them.
