if you have another account like msn or yahoo, send yourself an email to the account you have questions about.

but first I would log onto my providers web page and check my mail through there to be sure it is not your providers page giving you trouble

then most providers have a trouble shooting page just for this tells you step by step how to check your outlook set up

the provider is the company you get your email from

example www.aol.com

then log into your account there and see what happens maybe they are doing maintanence

your provider also has a trouble shoot tips for what they need logged in

my provider is huges

they just made changes to there email system so it required some updating on my outlook to get it too work right

I was thinking I came across something similar with my outlook before and it wasn't the provider or outlook it was another program blocking outlook from hooking up

after I cleaned all my cookies out and emptied my temp folder this problen went away

There could be million things going wrong. I am judging by the way you axplain the problem, that you have a very little idea of what you're doing with this computer. I am not blaming you.

There is nothing I know about heart surgery or rocket science or cow growing. We can't all be specialists in everything, that wouldn't make any sense.

Unfortunately, in their greed, Microsoft purposefully pre-configures Windows in the worst possible way, to make it incredibly hard for non-specialists, so that they spend money calling for help. That is the whole business idea of Microsoft.

Troubleshooter is worthless, as it is always presupposes that there is nothing wrong with a system, only a user. Forget about it. The best troubleshooter is to type the key words of your problem into a google search box.

There is nothing you'd need to "install", to check you mail using web browser. If a website says that there is something to install, then you should not be their customer, as they are clearly using you in their favor.

You should be able to login to your email through "web entrance" (so to speak) of your email account with your provider by using a browser, just the same as you logging in to mingle. There is no difference.

Lastly, you haven't mentioned this, but, do you see any error messages do to email not working?

can you send email? Sometimes you can send email but not receive..do to the pop and smtp configuration. Who is your mail provider? They might be trying to increase security with SSL or something and a settings has to be changed, happened to me to get warning messages that my email configuration isn't secure so one day they just cut me off until i fixed my configuration.

If you don't understand any of this, it's ok, let me know if you can send email (but not receive) I can help you with the smtp configuration.

This would do nothing to solve an email problem. All this does is check your hard disk for errors. It won't cause any harm doing it, but it is a pointless step if your not having any problems that suggest you are having a trouble with your hard drive.

Usually the ISP will reset the password for you (they won't know the pw because it hidden even from them) if you take them in a death certificate and proof that you in fact are the executor of his estate. Otherwise their is usually a process that you can change the password by answering some "secret" questions or having the ISP account info. The later (account info) is only if his email is provided through an ISP(comcast, hughes, aol, etc.). If it is web based(yahoo, gmail, hotmail, etc.) the former(secret question) is probably your only option.
