Topic: So, Tell Me About Yourself...

Is there anyone else out there who doesn't want to vomit up their entire personal history in the first couple of emails?

I get this complaint constantly: "You're one-liners are hilarious...but tell me more about yourself. What are you hiding...I just want to know more about you...etc..."

Is it just me, or are some people too probing...too quickly? I see many a thread complaining about the ones who say much too much right off the bat... Does anyone feel the way I do?

I don't mind at all someone telling me about themselves, but I don't like to be pushed into giving my whole life story to a stranger. The ones I hate the most are the ones that go like this......
"Ask me anything, I'm an open book".

I laugh whenever I read "tell me about yourself." My typical response is I'm 50 years old and there's a lot to tell. Can you be a little more specific?

I always like when the details reveal themselves in the course of banter. It is so much friendlier than the feeling you are being interviewed for a job.

Those are the folks for whom I have a pre-typed auto-biography since my first recollection and I send them a copy. Geeeez, and for some reason, I never hear back from them. I guess they didn't want to know about that scraped knee in 1965 and how harrowing it was to spill chocolate ice cream on my favorite dotted swiss dress when I was 6, or how I cried when I outgrew my patent leather mary janes??????....... you get the idea!!! laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

That's what profiles are for! Mine isn't all that well padded out but isn't part of the fun of getting to know someone asking them lots of questions?!

It is disheartening when they ask you questions that are already answered in your profile. Also, when they ask you again after you have answered it in a previous e-mail.

True, Meg. Nothing is more annoying to me than to be asked the same thing over and over. Just proves they have the attention span of a gnat!

I think questions are great...but I'm talking about asking things in the first or second email like: Are you a passionate woman? Do you like to kiss a lot? What brand of tampon do you use? OK, maybe that's going a lil too far...but you get my drift... Whatever I want a stranger to know IS IN MY PROFILE. Geez! Lemme at least get to know you before I tell you about what size bra I wear!
