To_cool_4_school has a decent grasp on metal genres. I'm slightly less frustrated.

I think that was a compliment. So I will take it. After my rant about people putting non death metal bands in their postings. The guy below You puts LAmb of God. Amazing !!

So a lot of these bands aren't going to fit strictly into the death metal genre... but it has so many subcategories these days I simply refer to anything really heavy and aggressive with screamed vocals as death metal. It might not be technically the correct way to go about it, but I consider all of the following bands to be in the same vein. There are some great ones above, gonna try not to repeat any.
Opeth Bloodbath Meshuggah Strapping Young Lad Iniquity Divinity Xerath (new UK band, check 'em out) Skinless Capharnaum Dying Fetus Nevermore (not screamed, but I still consider them DM) Scarve Darkane Dark Tranquillity Daylight Dies Non-Human Level |

no one has said anything about After The Burial. Maybe they fall more into Metal-core or Death-core or something, but whatever, they are insanely brutal. Same goes for Underneath The Gun. And don't forget about Dethklok! ;)

really though, it's too hard to keep track of all the sub-categories and whatnot, so many bands nowadays fit into 2 or 3 or even more of them. I just think of it all as metal, cause that's really the important thing. I do try to be aware of all the categories, but as to accurately fitting every band into one of them....... maybe not completely impossible, but definitely not worth the effort
