Is there any other reason why a person would show up as being online on yahoo messenger if they are not actually logged in?

My daughter, who is currently not using her yahoo and is in bed, keeps showing up as going offline and online; it's happened a few times today. She changed her password this afternoon and has not given it to anyone.

Is this some sort of glitch, or does it mean that someone is using her account? I've tried to write to her while it's showing her as being online, but there isn't any answer.

You have to uncheck the box in your Preferences under General where it says Automatically start Yahoo Messenger.

Also, if she has it on her cell phone, it may have something to do with that.

Hmmm, thanks for the reply but that's not what I meant - it's difficult to explain.

I meant that she's one of my contacts and I can see that her account is being used.

I'm logged into yahoo currently, but she's not. However the contact information keeps saying that she's online, then she goes offine, then back online as if someone is signing in and out of her account.

I don't mean the automatic start up.

Oh... it could be a glitch like you said, but just to be safe, I'd tell her to make her password a lot more technical with letters and numbers. Simple passwords are really easy to phish.

Hopefully she's not just being a stinker and not telling you the truth. lol

Good luck.

Thanks, I appreciate the help.

We just changed the password this afternoon, she's been with me all day, and is now in bed. There's no chance that she could have told anyone the password.

Make sure you've updated your copy of Messenger, as there was a recent update. I seem to remember something about an older version of Messenger "ghosting" various users' online statuses from online to offline in rapid succession.

Thanks, that sounds like what it's doing.

They just got the computer for Christmas and I downloaded the most recent version. Would the update be any more recent than that?

Yeah. The latest version of Messenger is 9.0.0.2112, which is obviously the one you wanna be getting. You can check to see if you've got the proper update by clicking help>about Yahoo Messenger.

If you don't see 2112 in the version number, then you're probably using an older version and you'll need to update.

Note that Yahoo also has an online version of Messenger that you can access via the Yahoo homepage. There's also an online IM client known as "Meebo" that will handle multiple IM protocols. And -of course- there's also Pidgin, which is an installable multi-IM protocol client program that is more reliable than Yahoo's Messenger program.
