I live in a small town, seems to be mostly friendly. I talk to pretty much anyone and most people will talk. The story is the town was going under in the 70s and the "hippies" moved in and saved it so lots of "old hippies" around here now. They have a massage school, lots of massage therapists obviously, they fight business franchises and try to keep the businesses all "mom and pop." Have a few franchises, but not many. Only 1 fast food "McDonald's," of course, and Subway, guess you could call it fast food, but the rest are family owned restaurants.

Have a great farmer's market, Co-Op (organic food), some eccentric people but they add "flavor" to the town.

Is a really pretty town, lots of old Victorian homes, surrounded by water on three sides.

Back in 2005, I moved to a small rural town in the far south Chicago suburbs, on the advice of a friend who told me it would be a nice quiet place to work on a book.

Well, it was that -- but it was also the unfriendliest place I've ever lived. If your family hadn't lived there for 17 generations, and if you didn't own about a hundred farm animals, you wasn't nuthin' --and they made it pretty clear they didn't really want outsiders around.

It wasn't a huge problem for me, most of the time, because I'm basically the reclusive type anyway -- but just try to meet someone there!

My friend -- the one who suggested I move there -- had this to say about meeting people: "The only way to meet people here is in a bar or a church."

Wish she would have told me that before I moved there! Neither of those is a viable option for me.

I finally had enough and moved out of there a few months ago.

I moved to the area when I was 8. It was very clannish, some parts still are. The rumor mill runs rampant and drives me insane. I usually tell them I don't believe it unless I hear from the horses mouth. Some parts grew up better than others. Some parts it's all about who you know and what you can get away with, observed opinion.glasses spock

The DC area is full of tourists and out-of-towners all the time. Yet, many people are not friendly toward strangers. I have no problem with strangers, though.

Seems like people in Cali are friendlier around the beach cities. I've never lived more than 15 miles from a beach so I'd say people are pretty friendly around here.

Except for me of course, I don't like anyone. smokin
