Massachusetts may consider using computer chips to charge drivers for mileage on state roads The idea behind the program is simple: As cars become more fuel efficient or powered by electricity, gas tax revenues decline. Yet the cost of building and maintaining roads and bridges is increasing. A state could cover that gap by charging drivers precisely for the mileage their vehicles put on public roads. wow |

thats just scary.

I think it's fair. If you don't mind driving on dirt roads, then I can see being opposed to it...

This will be followed by the mask they make you ware, so they can tax you on the air you breath.

The politicians have to pay for the Big Dig somehow.
Then they will charge taxes for people who ride bikes (both pedals and motorized), and people who walk on it. O_O

WOW
While I understand the need to fund roadways I think there has to be a better way. Honestly I think this is just another way to track and monitor the movements of people. I hope this idea is rejected. |

Want to walk your dog on the road too? Theres a tax for that! Even thinking about using the road at some future point, THERES A TAX FOR THAT!

Exactly - just implant the damn chip in me already, sorry to say my life is truly not that exciting hopefully I'd bore whomever has to sit there, watch my every move and track me I too hope it's rejected. |

What is a Gas Tax?
It is a charge per gallon of gas. Therefore, unless you push your car around town or have figured a different way to propel it, then you are already paying by the mile. If you drive a more fuel efficient vehicle than most. Good for you, but you are still paying per mile. This article doesn't make any sense. Perhaps its just a fear tactic... |

prolly be cheaper just to build toll booths

prolly be cheaper just to build toll booths which they are doing in Florida, I-95 now has toll lanes and more planned to go up |
MA already has a toll road, but they want to save money by not having to man the booth's. The GPS unit is passive so nobody can track you.
Oregon already has it in trials. |
