I'm doing OK. Business is still dead and that worries me a little. You operate heavy machinery don't you? Earth moving equipment or something like that? |

I'm still working on my paper.
Because I really can't decide whether to write about The Indian Wars or the Raid on Son Tay, I'm doing the proposal for both. Stupid, huh? It has to be about Intelligence, and that's what's making it so tough. The Indian Wars (Apache, 1861-1886) is a more original topis, but I can't put it all into a rational sequence. |

Hiya Skyy
What kinda paper do you have to write? How long I mean. The Apache fights were fascinating but would be hard to talk about from an "intel" viewpoint. The US cavalry didn't have any intelligence so they fought the Apaches. How's that for a paper? |

Hiya Skyy What kinda paper do you have to write? How long I mean. The Apache fights were fascinating but would be hard to talk about from an "intel" viewpoint. The US cavalry didn't have any intelligence so they fought the Apaches. How's that for a paper? Length isn't relevent. I could make comparisons to Afghanistan, the terrain, border crossings, the need for native scouts. The Indians used IMINT, to read a trail. Indians were employed as spies on the reservations, as well as scouts. They were great at disrupting communications. They would cut the telegraph lines and then tie the ends, so troops riding the line looking for the break couldn’t find it very easily. As a response, the US used heliographs. http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/COMMS/heliograph/heliograph.htm Somewhere, I feel the need to include that the Apache suffered under the Spanish and then the Mexicans. They fought to help the USA in the Mexican War. Then, the USA I could look at low-intensity conflict lessons. Gen. Crook’s innovations: mule packs and Apache scouts, since the whole cavalry was slow and never surprise the Indians. “It was only when General George Crook chased [us] with a column supplied by mule pack trains” one of Geronimo’s warriors remarked, “.that [we] had a hard time staying out of reach.” Although it was not new to use Indians to fight Indians, Gen. Crook was the first to use scouts of the same tribe. Crook included in his official report: “I cannot too strongly assert that there has never been any success in operations against these Indians, unless Indian scouts were used. These Chiricahua scouts...were of more value in hunting down and compelling the surrender of the renegades than all other troops...combined. The use of Indian scouts was dictated by the soundest of military policy”. Crook started out mixing columns of cavalry and scouts, but eventually went to more and more scouts. In 1886, pursuing Geronimo, it was without cavalry. Using Apache scouts was tactically brilliant and it also gave Crook a psychological advantage. Crook was a real leader, first in the saddle, not expected his men to do something he wouldn’t do. That was very important in the harsh environment, that his men have good morale. He learned his topography and geography personally, not through reports. But I just don’t know how to put it together, for this assignment. And what conclusion to make? What lesson is learned? And I would like to include some stuff about broken trearties, the end results being the same as happened with the Versailled Treaty. |
