We would need to discuss our personal interpretation of marriage. Then I would have to let him know "open" is not my view of marriage and we may as well say good bye.

What's the point of an "open" relationship? Either you're with someone or your not. It's that simple. If you want an "open" relationship, while with someone, then that 'someone' isn't all the special.

I would tell him sure give me the ring then I would have such and open relationship I would never see him again. If I had gotten myself in a live together situation the next time he went somewhere he would come home and find me and everything that was mine gone as yesterday. No phone number, no forwarding address, no Dear John letter NOTHING! Cuz that is pretty much what you mean to him. If this is what really happen to you my sympathies.

Nope. No way. Not gonna happen. Don't understand open marriages at all. Why bother getting married in that case.
