Topic: On The Offensive Line... | |
---|---|
It all depends on the subject matter. We each have different things that can put us on the defensive or even offend us. Sometimes you speak up, sometimes you don't. I try to pick my battles wisely, although there are a few "hot" topics that I might post in and seem on the defensive, or I have even emailed people over. Only so that they might see a different side of it. It usually works. I dunno....life would be dull if we all agreed on everything I guess. I think a good, healthy debate can be stimuating & even fun! But when someone resorts to name-calling or labelling...it gives me the impression that they have no other way to "fight" their battle...sad, really. And THAT'S what is offensive to me... I agree with you there.....it's only respectful to not belittle someone else just so you can try to "win" a debate over something. Also, we've had the whole discussion before over people investing feelings or emotions over topics online. I don't think it's a sad situation at all (as some have suggested). I see it as real people having real thoughts and feelings over real subjects. For some, this is the a great outlet to meet friends, have interesting conversation and use it as an adjunct to some of the time we may not get out to be with other adults, because of family or medical situations or whatever. If you are not planning to invest any of your time seeing someone else's side of the subject, why bother? Isn't that how we get to know people and maybe even find someone compatible? (If that is what you are here for, I realize some are not) |

Debating can be interesting and entertaining. However, many people can't handle it without making it personal and resorting to insults and name calling. |

I personally think any and all sites such as this should still have to follow our constitutional rights (freedom of speech being one) After all, This is America...right??? No one is trying to step on any one's constitutional rights. In every aspect of society.... school, work, public places and even home, there's a code of conduct mandated by common sense and respect for one another not to trample on one another. It's no different on sites such as this one. Sitting at home in front of our computer screens unseen does not mean we should not keep ourselves in check just as we would in the RW. |

no big deal really..... it doesnt take long before you start to see ones motives and then just take it with a grain of salt. I am learning the art of thread posting!

Then there are those who are easily offended, yet feel they can be rude to anyone and get away with it.
