I Begin to Understand

(If I want only goodness for your life
I would have said farewell at hello.)

There is more shade than light in me
It seems like that when I try to be
A man who meets my own demands
To be close to your gracious hands

I painted myself out of love by my doubt
Accepted my flaws as an unworthy lout
Denying love’s call as a chance for life
Blaming myself that I have no wife

Is it pretension to demand so much
A handy excuse, a failure’s crutch
Look at me; see the dare in my desires
For you and I together to be live wires

Sparking, sparkling, crackling heat
We dared and felt without retreat
Then why deal breakers come between
Dashing hopes for what might have been

Accept nothing (no one) less than pure
As if Christ alone is loneliness’ cure
Our flawed weary hearts full of need
We started to give and take as agreed

Stepping back, finding reason to refuse
Giving each other a worthwhile excuse
Now I am shamed for daring to embrace
Only to end by parting ways with grace

This writing is to declare the real shame
That parting now is just to play a game
No deal breaker is real except our fears
Closeness comes by courage and tears

Let’s cry together conquering ourselves
Living richly with gold stolen from elves
Building our rainbow to shine all around
Teach bluebirds to sing the love we found

Making is finding, and finding is keeping
Keeping is growing; growing takes weeping
Self sacrificed gives up all deal breaking
Steal my loneliness; leave my heart quaking

I dared, you dared, and let’s dare go higher
Lower standards, gaining love we require
This was the way of youthful love bloomed
In aging ‘twas lost with wisdom presumed

Giving me up, I offer my faults all to you
Daring shame of refusal, trust open and true
You can change me, but not so from afar
Dare to come in; my heart’s door is ajar.

Close it behind you, if you choose to leave
Carry the welcome mat away if you grieve
Or dust the doorstep, open windows blind
Be home, be sure, and put our past behind.
