---|---|
I think a lot more poeple should be aware of what they read. Let's try
this. Try looking at the article based on facts, without conjecture, without propaganda, without sensationalism. By Mark Tran The Guardian UK Wednesday 25 April 2007 SEE TOPIC FOR ORIGINAL ARTICLE. NOW TAKE IT ARART, break it down, what do we know according to this story - specefically related to Khadr and why he's even in the news. KEEP READING, see what is really being said here. 1. a Canadian national and alleged Taliban fighter who was captured in Afghanistan when he was 15. (CAPTURED AT 15) 2. His name is Omar Khadr 3. has spent most of the past five years in the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay. (CAPTURED AT 15 SPENT 5 YEARS AT GUANTANAMO BAY MILITARY PRISON) 4. Khadr has a Pentagon-appointed lawyer who said: the US would become the first country in modern history to try a war crimes suspect who was a child at the time of the alleged violations if a trial went ahead. (THE US WOULD BECOME THE FIRST COUNTRY IN MODERN HISTORY TO TRY A WAR CRIMES SUSPECT WHO WAS A CHILD AT THE TIME OF THE ALLEGED VIOLATIONS) 5. Mr Khadr has been charged with murder, attempted murder, providing support to terrorism, conspiracy and spying under rules for military trials adopted last year. (LIST IS CHARGES BASED UNDER THE RULES FOR MILITARY TRIALS ADOPED LAST YEAR) 6. The conspiracy charge is based on acts allegedly committed before Mr Khadr was 10, according to his defence team. (THE ALLEGED ACTS LISTED WERE COMMITTED BERFORE KHADR WAS 10 YEARS OLD) 7. He was born in Toronto, Canada (ORIGIN OF BIRTH) 8. Mr Khadr faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. (THE MAXIMUM PENALTY IF FOUND GUILTY - LIFE IMPRISONMENT) 9. Mr Khadr's attorneys urged Canada and the US to negotiate a "political resolution" (KHADR'S ATTORNEYS URGE CANADA AND US TO NEGOTIATE A POLITICAL RESOLUTION) 10. Dennis Edney, a Canadian lawyer for Mr Khadr's family, said the new tribunal system, allows coerced and hearsay evidence. (AT LEAST ONE CANADIAN LAWYER BELIEVES THAT THE NEW TRIBUNAL SYSTEM, TRYING KHADR, ALLOWS COERCED AND HEARSAY EVIDENCE) 11. Mr Khadr will be the second prisoner to face terror charges under new military tribunals after the US supreme court in June struck down the previous military tribunal system at Guantánamo as unconstitutional. (KHADR WILL BE THE SECOND PRISONER TO FACE TERROR CHARGES UNDER NEW MILITARY TRIBUNALS. THE US SUPREME COURT STRUCK DOWN THE PREVIOUS SYSTEM AT GUANTANAMO AS UNCONSTITUTIONAL) 12. Congress has also passed a law establishing a new (military tribunal) system, which is also being challenged. (NOW THE NEW MILITARY TRIBUNAL SYSTEM THAT CONGRESS PASSED IS ALSO BEING CHALLENGED) 13. The US military says Mr Khadr threw a grenade that killed a US Green Beret sergeant, wounded another sergeant (US MILITARY SAY KHADR THREW A GRENEADE THAT KILLED A US GREEN BERET SERGEANT, AND WOUNDED ANOTHER SERGEANT) So NOW put it all together: Omar Khadr CAPTURED AT 15 has spent most of the past five years in the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay. Mr Khadr has been charged with murder, attempted murder, providing support to terrorism, conspiracy and spying under rules for military trials adopted last year. THE ALLEGED ACTS LISTED WERE COMMITTED BERFORE KHADR WAS 10 YEARS OLD. THE US WOULD BECOME THE FIRST COUNTRY IN MODERN HISTORY TO TRY A WAR CRIMES SUSPECT WHO WAS A CHILD AT THE TIME OF THE ALLEGED VIOLATIONS. THE MAXIMUM PENALTY IF FOUND GUILTY - LIFE IMPRISONMENT. KHADR'S ATTORNEYS URGE CANADA AND U.s. TO NEGOTIATE A POLITICAL RESOLUTION. AT LEAST ONE CANADIAN LAWYER BELIEVES THAT THE NEW TRIBUNAL SYSTEM, TRYING KHADR, ALLOWS COERCED AND HEARSAY EVIDENCE. KHADR WILL BE THE SECOND PRISONER TO FACE TERROR CHARGES UNDER NEW MILITARY TRIBUNALS. THE US SUPREME COURT STRUCK DOWN THE PREVIOUS SYSTEM AT GUANTANAMO AS UNCONSTITUTIONAL. NOW THE NEW MILITARY TRIBUNAL SYSTEM THAT CONGRESS PASSED IS ALSO BEING CHALLENGED. US MILITARY SAYS KHADR THREW A GRENEADE THAT KILLED A US GREEN BERET SERGEANT, AND WOUNDED ANOTHER SERGEANT. FOLKS, please tell me you see something terribly wrong with this picture. Please tell me you have MANY QUESTIONS. Please tell me, your quick assessment to judge, was based on some purposely erroneus information printed by a newpaper whos only purpose was to gain your attention and stir up feelings in an already emotionally charged environment. PLEASE TELL ME YOU ALL THINK MORE CLEARLY THAN SOME OF THE POSTS I'VE SEEN HERE. |

Wll red what do you think we should do with a kid that thru a grenade
which killed a man and wounded others? Pat him on the head and give him a lollipop? At 10 you know right from wrong. My son is six and knows guns and bombs kill.I say try him and if guilty punish him. |

Cutelildevil, I suspect your son is not being raised in quite the same
conditions that this boy was. Do you really believe that a 10 year old, that your 10 year old has not only the intelligence, but the presence of mind to indescrimantly, of his own volition through his own thought processes, make a political decision based of knowledge he/she has gained and purposely commit the acts that he is accused of? Did you see the acts he is accused of? And yet the only thing he did, that the article states, is throw a grenade at two service ment. Honey, if you can sit there and say that, any 10 year old can, based on their own intellect, commit such crimes, then we need to be letting 10 year olds have a vote. Sweetie, we don't even give enough credance to a man or woman we would send to thier death in a war to make a good enough judgement in a voting booth until they're 21. Yet we give enough credance to a 10 year old child to take responsibility for something like this. Man, I hope you're never put on jury. |

He committed murder
What do you suppose we do with him? We very well can't set him free to commit murder again can we? Now my opinion He is in fact a child, the crimes were committed at age 10 which makes his parents responsible. They should bare the brunt of the punishment themselves. But we still cannot turn the child loose, so what do we do? commit him to an institution? Regardless of his age he has to learn that what he done was wrong and punishable, but he is too young to spend his entire life locked away. I dunno, lot of hatred in the child sounds like to me or a very messed up mind. I'm not sure there is an answer |

maybe Im missing something here....
Omar Khadr was wounded by US soldiers during a battle near Khost, Afghanistan, and taken into US custody in July 2002. He has spent most of the past five years in the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay If he killed a man during a battle,, How is it murder????? I must be missing a valuable piece of information.. |
|
|
|
I mean if the boy killed another soldier during combat how does the
charge of murder fit? He should be a POW, if thats the case no matter if he is 6 or 60... I must be missing something.... |
|
|
|
yes you are Fanta
he was fighting on the side of terrorists allegedly I ask again, should be turn him loose to commit the same? |
|
|
|
Fanta, HORRAY, someone FINALLY got it. Take the sensationalism out of
the story and it becomes a blur of inconsistant facts, with no basis given, what-so-ever for the stand that this government is supposedly taking against this child. Yet, all you need to do is hear, that this kid killed two U.S. service personel and everyone has judged. They have not even read the story, or at the very least, they do not have the ability to read for content. This was the only point I was trying to get to. I have to say, the responces worry me a great deal. |

fighting on the side of terrorists,,,,hmmmmm
That doesnt make sense.......... Did he bomb a US facility?? What does the Geneva convention say about that.. Is that a definition assigned by GW, or ecognized bt the Geneva accords.... I ask because, the enemy is now calling us terrorist Does that mean our soldiers are illegable to be tried as murderers by other countries, or is the rules of war still governed by the laws of the geneva convention.. I think someone is splitting hairs on this, and playing a dangerous game with our soldiers lives.. |

oh, i read it...and was about to be ill.
not until adolescence does the concept of death become real, psychologically. a child that is YOUNGER THAN TEN does NOT understand death...not really. they might grasp the concept, but that's about it. even if this happened in the states, i would not want this child's entire life thrown away. are we going to charge each one of our military that has taken a life with murder? |

like i said from the begining, i would have shot the dude.
you yourself said a comment about the environment in which he was raised, it was nothing like the one we know here, so quit trying to relate his rearing to that of an american, you and i both know its not lolipops and cotton candy out there. but since i wasnt there to blow his little freaggin head off, they took him into custody, so now he is an enemy combatant (in which case he doesnt get a lawyer- he just gets to sit in jail until we decide we are no longer at war with terrorist) ask him what he wants, you wanna die, or you wanna rot? choice is his right? screw him , dont give two shakes of camel pee what happens to him. sorry just not empathetic for these guys, they would rather slit your freakin throat as to look at you, and you wanna do what with them? feed them chicken and teach them to cluk, at least ways we could get a laugh at a bad situation. |

armydoc, don't fall into the same catagory as others do. Save your
cynicism for the field. The article says this kid was born in Canada, his parents live in Canada. At 10 why was this kid where he was? The point is, we know nothing from this news story that would give us any backgroud on this kid or even begin to answer any 1 of a thousand questions. Even the basic information we get from the story, those things we might actually consider fact, are not consistant in their context between each other. What I'm saying is that the new prints for sales and to that end there is no scruple to which they will not sink, not even when it comes to children. I have the news of this country and I so disapprove of those who read this news as if they were reading truth. So many can't even tell the difference between what a fact is and realationship the rest of a story has or doesn't have to the facts that may or may not even be listed. |

I think one of the most evil thing these islamic terrorists do is the
way they ruin their children. And as I personally know of a freak, who murdered at the age of 15, and was then released at 21, then went out and killed someone else, yup, pretty much a write off. Have also known kids ruined beyond repair at earlier ages. Too bad you couldn't give those who ruined them the death penalty so that they couldn't do it to any more kids. |
