The only trouble that could be had would be if he were to lose the ability to bend his finger at said knuckle. If it were damaged to such an extent, chances are that it'd be a permanent condition.

Well... the chances of getting a working knuckle after it being crushed are not quite all that good. I've known a number of people who've had crushed knuckles, and they've all had some form of limited amount of motion afterward. This doesn't mean that you couldn't engage in some form of re-constructive surgery to regain some of the mobility of said damaged knuckle, though.
