i love it when people come in and struggle with the idea of getting glasses or using them. i love my glasses. lol they help me see.

my rx was bad since day one and i've been wearing glasses since i was 6. its actually staunched the progression of my astigmatism.

but working in my office for so long, i've learned something. just because you think everything was fine.. its not.

2 weeks ago i had a guy come in who's wife forced him to get an exam. it'd been at least 20 years. he said 'nothin's wrong with my eyes!' an was even grumpy to the techs.

well..

we took an optomap (which is a retinal scan/digital picture of the inside of the eye and replaces dialation)and found the guy had a tumor in his brain attempting to connect to the optical nerve.

we've obviously refered him to his PCP and a neurologist who can help.. but if he'd not come in.. and caught the tumor at such an early age.. what would have happened?

i love my glasses and i love the way i look in them, i just refuse to become dependent on them, and my eyesight isn't bad enuf to require i wear them while i drive so i'm doin alright

nope hasn't happened to me but I do get regular eye exams... Maybe you should have your eyes checked?

As long as I can see okay, I don't see why I should get my eyes examined. (If it ain't broken don't fix it, is my motto.)

flowerforyou

People should still get eye exams to keep an eye (no pun lol)
on the health of the eye. It's preventative care for future problems.

I know that as a kid I had to wear my glasses all the time. As I got older my vision was improving, to the point where they kept lowering my prescription. That was cool. But now, I have these contacts, and while I can see distance just fine, forget trying to thread a needle, have to remove them to see the minute stuff I work with. Now how does that one work???

You can get bifocal contacts to help see close up. They just decrease the prescription of one eye a tiny bit.

you can't check EVERY part of your body.

That's okay. It's only your vision at stake.

An eye exam every other year is all it takes to check for glaucoma and more.

i have a prescription for my nearsightedness but i refuse to wear my glasses because my eyes become dependent on them and then i can't see without them.

my prescription hasn't changed since i was 22 and i think it's because i won't wear my glasses

They could still change as you age. Not because you don't wear glasses.

I hope I'm never driving on the same roadways as you.

If you drive, the eyes are vital. Not just for yourself, but for everyone else out there.

To do otherwise is like walking around with a loaded weapon in your hand you never see. Who knows when you'll accidently put some pressure on that trigger.

My eyes are getting really bad lately. I cant read anything without a cheap pair of dollar store reading glasses.......

I DONT WANT TO WEAR GLASSES!!!sad noway

But....its inevitable as most people have to get some sort of glasses as we get older.

Next stop........hearing aids!!surprised
A few years ago I bought bright green coloured contacts for fun......I had a hella time getting those things in/outnoway laugh noway and Im not sure if I could stick strange things in my eyes like that again!!
ya know.. if you're adverse to glasses.. there are multifocal contacts.. :p they are just like bifocal glasses

LOL oh girl.

first color contacts fit everyone funny because they are pretty much for looks. its like buying a pair of heels that are meant to be viewed upside down if ya know what i'm sayin.. walkin in those puppies is definitely out. ;p

ya need training thats all. it took me forever to figure out my quirks with contacts.

What is your opinion on laser eye surgery, bobby?

you need to weigh the options. RK scares the crap out of me bcause they literally take a freakin sushi knife and cut a checkerboard into your cornea (the clear lens over the iris) ...

Lasik.. takes a laser and forces your cornea into a flat shape.

the problem with lasik is the same with any other ocular surgery.. as time passes.. it will change with your body and will not be permanent. the damage to the cornea depends on how good of an ophthalmologist the dr is.

and don't go to a discount place. you get what you pay for and you need those degrees and years of study ... not some creepy mail order trade school tech to do it.

oh yeah.. edit.. and when lasik or RK goes bad.. it goes real bad. i mean oh my god i've seen some surgical destruction out there

vision insurance is the cheapest medical based insurance you would have to pay for from your employer. if you can't do it then don't do it. but if you have the insurance, or can afford it, do it. because you could be growin a veritable potato garden back there man.

and really look into the optometrist. chain stores aren't great and they don't always check for macular degeneration, glaucoma, nevuses, freckles, tumors, cysts, lattice, retinal thinning, torn retina, all kinds of stuff they miss because all they do is say "read the lowest line you can" and get you a pair of spiffy black frame nerdboy glasses ...

ya know? its such a huge fashion statement now.. what you wear on your face.

don't get me started on the importance of your eyeballs.

and don't get me started on the importance of sunwear!! oh my god.

I have heard that certain eye exercises can reshape your eyeballs and correct your eyesight. Has there been any studies in this area?

Lots of studies but nothing conculsive. there are exercises that help with people who have roving eye. or wandering eye as some call it lol they help the muscles but not the actual sight from inside the eyeball.

there are special contact lenses you can get that do correct your vision overnight.. its soo crazy the amount of technology that is coming out these days.

there are Wave Lenses and Corneal Refractive THerapy lenses (CRT) which you insert at night, crash out for like 7 or 8 hours.. wake up, remove them and boom you go all day with corrected vision.

These contacts have been found to help reduce the amount of changes in children who's vision would otherwise get vastly worse over time. so with the use of the contacts... it slows that process down and keeps the harsher rx's at bay as well as you not needing glasses or contacts during the day.

CRT's are presized..

WAVES are fully custom built for your cornea only.

Even if you don't have insurance, there are universities that have their interns do it and there are clinics.

My sister was diagnosed with macular degeneration. Do you know if there is any new technology to help that?

it depends on what she has.. wet or dry. i know one has an injection treatment that is doing wonders right now saving people's vision.

others are taking supplements. Lutein and zeazanthin are the two natural components in our diets that can save the eyes. eat lots of leafy greens. spinach and collards have a boat load of it in them.

I can't remember if her's is wet or dry. She is big on taking supplements and lots of leafy greens but probably not enough. I will tell her to eat more spinach. I will ask her which her's is. I think her doctor's did not give her a lot of hope.

its called presbyopia.

its a time in your life when your vision changes and your near vision decreases. you find yourself holding what you are reading, farther and farther from your face just to focus.

it comes with age and effects everyone after 35 at a different time in their life.

its time to have an eye exam and see if you need progressives.

LOL Nope, these are the lenses they gave me on my last exam,(heck, I even went in and complained about it and got a different prescription) and yeah, they have been this way since day one. Don't think you can come down with an affliction like that in a half hour or less.

dude no offense but i have no idea what you're talkin about. my comment was a reply to the OP.

Sorry, the way the posts fell, looked like you were responding to my question. Don't get bent LOL
