If you were the President of the United States.

What would you do given the present world situation?

I would do what I could to end the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan,
then I would start taking care of things in the U.S. Things like
helping the homeless, addressing the needs of our veterans etc... I
would handle things at home before I would stick my nose in the business
of another country.

With or without the troubles of a pain-in-the-arse congress and senate
that never seem to cooperate and the other needless hassles of politics?

I'll just assume I have unillateral power to do as I see fit.

First- settle this "gay marriage" debate. By declaring that marriage is
a religious concept, and it is illegal for a government organization to
put restrictions or rights upon it. Then update the legal value of a
"civil union" to match that of a traditional marriage law, then
considering all "marriage licenses" to be "civil unions" from that
moment forward. What foreign nations choose to call marriages will be
treated similarly.

Second- make real peace with our international neighbors by leaving
them alone. Strengthening our homeland military and eliminating its
presence in other nations. Except, perhaps Japan and similar situations.
Also, adding a duel-value to our military, so that each serviceman will
serve viable border/security functions whilst in the states, so we can
increase our defensibility without increasing government costs.

Third- strengthen our economy by raising tariff rates to a point where
American companies have a chance on American soil.

Fourth- declare that "services", such as phone operators/tech support
counts under similar tariff laws.

Fifth- loosen immigration laws (while strengthening borders). So that
foreign workers can get legal jobs in this nation with relative ease.
And, of course, pay taxes/etc.

Sixth- create a "foreign improvement inition"- that establishes
reductions of tariffs for nations that meet our requirements for labor
and wellbeing of workers. Thus encouraging world nations to fix their
own countries.

Very nicely put, Poet.drinker

I'm not done yet.

Seventh- do something REAL about our polution problems. Including
considerable alterations to recycling and disposal projects.

Eigth- take a page from ancient Rome and use our military for
improvement projects. Including cleanup functions, urban
renewal/defence, building repair workers, road workers, and basically
everything a city/state/country needs done.

Ninth- start the "terra establishment" project. Which will use
technology to make desert and wasteland more habitable to human beings.
Including prefabricated neighborhoods.

Tenth- Start the "disaster recovery" initiative- which will put money
into a prepared responce to the reasonably concievable disasters that
could happen in this country- primarily to evacuate cities and relocate
them to the prefab neighborhoods.

Eleventh- Revitalize the space program. Including an attempt to start a
real base on the Moon. Which will be an even more threatening military
resource than atomic weapons, as well as many scientific and tactical
values for space exploration and colonization.

Twelvth- Increase punishment for sex crimes to something remotely
reasonable given the nature of these offences.

Honestly, I've no idea... I doubt I'd make a very good president
laugh I'm sure there's alot more to it, than most non-politicians
think. I'd like to believe I would do the right thing, whether that
would make me a popular president or not...drinker

Poet it is illegal to us US Federal troops within the continental united
states. (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines) The only troops that can be
deployed for fighting purposes within us borders (except in an extreme
emergency.. i.e. US under attack) are the various national guards and
the Coast Guard.

You would have to go to congress and get that changed first.

Poet I must say that was comprehensive.

I have to disagree on the desert thing though. The earth needs its
deserts they are part of the close cycle system that drives the weather.
They also are part of the system that clenses the air of fine
particulate matter.

Look up the results of the biosphere project in arizona. Without the
desert the biosphere can not function.

Hmm. Ok.... I'll have to look into that, but from what I understood,
deserts actually encourage harsher weather patterns. And that claiming
the american deserts as temperate weather would have the side effect of
eliminating many tornadoes in the States.

Oh well, even leaving the deserts alone, we'll have plenty of viable
space to play with.

And, yes, like I said- is this "with or without the annoying congress
and senate and stuff".

Because if I have those fat, lazy, corrupt jackasses to deal with....
my act as president would be a missile strike on the congress during a
joint houses meeting.

I imagine the first thing I would 'do' would be....learn that there is
very little that I can do.
If I could do anything I wanted to do, I would abolish congress and
institute progress. I would do away with political parties, anyone who
wants can run for any office in the land...he/she who gets the most
votes, wins. Of course, to make this fair, we would have to move a lot
of people from the most populated areas so a candidate from any area
would have an equal chance.
Federal judges would be elected by popular vote and would serve limited
terms, as would those in progress and all federal offices.
Abolish the IRS, institute a federal sales tax with an exemption for
those under the poverty level.
Since I don't believe we should be the worlds police force, after
quickly finishing a few things we are engaged in, I would bring our
military forces home, revamp the Veterans Administration.

uk1971...RESIGN! that is brillant and make sure you take Cheney with
you. happy then Dubya can continue on with his self-destructive
behavior devil drinker smokin sad sick
mad

This is my analogy of his presidency....he run our country as
destructively as a drunk going the wrong way down a four lane highway.
But daddy's little boy never has faced consequences, well except he
carries the legend of being the most dangerous, destructive, stubborn,
dumbest, failure president in the US history.

you got my vote Poet...I would add this:

retool the auto industry to built coast to coast bullet rail trains like
japan & europe...

Explore the Tesla shield theory for continental protection..(this
is different than star wars)

take a tough line on corporations that move headquarters off
shore to avoid taxes..

grumble

Wouldn't need to take a hard line on the taxes. The tariff laws would
do my work for me.

As to the Tesla field- anything large enough to protect anything larger
than a small building would cause so much environmental damage that we'd
be better off dropping a nuke on ourselves.

Poet that is a whole lot of misinformed incoherent babble.
Loosen immigration? It is (legal immigration) already higher than it has
been in 70 yrs at 17 % of our population. We are overcrowded now even
without the 12 million illegal immigrants here now. What are you going
to do starve us all?
From the sound of your use of the word tariff, you dont even know what a
tariff is.
You could use troops along the border though, the law says that military
forces can not be used in civil affairs, border security does not fall
into civil matters.
If you are to be president you should study the issues better, there are
enough uninformed and confused ppl in America now.
Babble, incoherent babble...

Fanta46's photo
Mon 04/23/07 12:23 PM
I will give you points for gumption though. at least you realize the
direction of our policies now arent working...

First of all. America doesn't even use a TENTH of her viable, prepared
farmland. America, alone, at maximum production- could put food on the
plate of ever last living human on earth. No human being in all six
billion would ever need fear starvation.

And tariffs are taxes placed on incoming good from other countries.
They're far lower than the compensory rates of our workers.

As to the immigration laws. They're ok for most of the world. But
they're painfully discriminate against hispanics, africans, and (now)
middle-easterners. Basically, if you're asian or white, you'll be
welcomed happily. If you've got any kind of permament tan- you'll have
troubles.
