My favorite would have to be Duke, hands down. He was a white german sheppard. My Mom got him when my brother was born, I was 8. She figured he would keep me occupied while she dealt with a new baby. He went everywhere with me. At the time we lived on Holloman AFB in New Mexico. We were a familiar site to everyone. He slept with me, he ate with me, he got into trouble with me. He taught himself something that you see guide dogs do. When I walked with him, when we would come to a curb he would get in front of me and not let me pass until he saw that there was no traffic, he'd move outta the way and let me go. He was not taught this! He picked this up completely on his own. I had him for several years. He moved to 3 different states with me before we finally settled in MS. If I ever found another dog like that I would feel twice blessed.

i had a pitbull when i was a kid..he used to run laps around the house before we would go anywhere to be sure it was safe and when we came home we would open the door let him in and he would check the entire house to make sure no one was in there ,then came back to the door and would bark once to let us know it was ok.

We had so many pets growing up. My favorite was our beagle, Daisy. She went with me everywhere, had the cutest litter of puppies. They were born shortly before Christmas and we still joke about them knocking over the bottle of wine that was under the tree and helping themselves. We had 5 tipsy little beagles. Sadly, we lost her to breast cancer.

It's a tie...
I had a german shepherd named Missy who was my constant companion. My father had trained her and she watched over us as we played, let us ride on her back (God bless her!) and kept us safe. Growing up as the oldest, and out in the country, she was my best friend for many years. My other favorite was my horse, Star. My father brought him home when I was 2. With him, we all learned to ride and even though other horses came along, he was always my favorite. We would ride the trails in the forest behind our house, wondering down to the Elizabeth River. He was cantankerous and sweet. If he decided someone had ridden him too long, he would sit down like a dog and the person would just slide of his back. But if I wanted to ride, he would go for hours. My father swore there wasn't a fence that could hold him. If he wanted to go on a visit, he's find a way to get out. He was a part of my life for 18 years and I still have his stable nameplate tucked away. Don't think it's something I'll ever be able to part with... What a sweet thread this is, great idea. |

OMG OMG I so love that......a few of my very first feral I taught how to go to the bathroom on the toilet...that was pretty funny to see someone go in the bathroom and not know and see a cat going to the bathroom...Very first one I taught to flush..but others would never do it.

pet you had in your childhood and why was it your favorite? I haven't stopped being a child, yet. So far, he's on my pool table... staring at me in a 'feed me' position. |

a dachsund named "lady". she was a great dog, sweet, funny, playful. no other dog has come close, which is probably why i like cats better now.
of all the cats we had, "fat cat" ruled... |
