It is the amount of drive you are willing to take in order to take the path that would lead you to your dream career. Hard work, dedication, and endurance seems to be the way to go as an Astronomer. slaphead But hey, what do I know...really. flowerforyou

My first path is done. Now the hard part is finding a new path.

Our true paths never stray. We just try to direct our selves wrong now and then. drinker

Depends on if the choice is yours, or if you are living out the ideals of somebody else. The latter always leads to disappointment, IMO. The former, at least you find out what you wanted to find out about your goals in life.
Hobbies are great ways to explore before taking a deep whole-life/career plunge.

I wanted to be something known as a "studio composer"- someone who composes songs and music for film and television (kinda like what John Williams and Danny Elfman do). It's fun, it's challenging, and one in that line of work can make some pretty decent coin, too.

Sadly, all of my attempts at getting to that point had pretty much went sideways-

- I went about trying to take music courses in High School and College, only to have to deal with the massive budgetary cuts enacted by the State at the time. The result? Whole fields of study were totally eliminated... including the music departments.

- My attempts to apply to music schools (Berklee School of Music) were pretty much derailed because of my own budgetary limitations.

- Any and all attempts at trying to find connections in that line-of-work were for naught, as it's a pretty small (and therefore VERY competitive) field to get into.

So I had to pretty much abandon the whole music thing.

Change all that to "studio producer", and mine is pretty much the exact same thing.

When i was a kid, i always wanted to be a cowboy, but growing up in nw.pennsylvania kinda put a damper on that situation. So i studied to be a police officer and became a pa. state trooper cadet. I never made it through the academy because i could not stand having people tell me what to do all day. So now I am a service tech working in the petroleum industry. You have to try what you are going to do before you do it, so you can see if you are going to like it. my recommendation is to try something that resembles your chosen profession before you waste alot of money on it. School loan payments suck, especially if you can't find a job. Many people spend alot of money on college for degrees that do not support the amount of money spent on such degree. You can either do what you want and just get by, or you can do what is in demand and be succesful. You have to weigh your personal capabilities. Remember, every occupation has its advantages as well as set backs. The one that you can personally live with is the one for you. Please do not choose your profession for anyone else but you. This includes dear old mom and dad
