say ya dog lovers out there...i am taking care of a german shepherd....he weighed in at 59 lbs a few weeks ago, and i want to know what to feed him.
the book said that GS's need raw meat, wheat, and cabbage? um so i thought since i can't grow wheat, and i hate boiled cabbage, i shall feed him some raw meat. well he got sick of it, and so i went to white boiled rice, and boiled chicken. he loved that. trouble is, it is so expensive. so i quit the red meat, and chicken, and went back to kibble. and dog food. now the dog has developed this sick habit, which includes eating his poop, and so he is full. he likes his poop better than my cooking i do believe. what to do about this... he is a seizure, narcotics, cadavier dog, and i think he is bored myself. any opinions? |

ask who had him first what they fed him...I myself would find a dog food he likes and he would eat it or I reckon stick with his poop...

well first of all, you have to be right there to catch the poop. how many of us stand guard over the dog when he is pooping? i have other things to do...
then, i read he, the dog, not my husband, is either bored, has a deficiency or something.....stress in his environment... i don't know which it is...could be my x husband when i finish with him...back to the real dog... this is a working dog that has been taken away from it's owner, long story, but due to be reunited. i am no dog whisperer....that is why i turned to u all. and i know there are some experts out there... |

Some things I can think of are as follows:
He's hungry or doesn't like the type of food you are feeding him. He's got worms. He's anxious. I think you will have to look to the cause to find the answer. |

Humm best to call a Vet tell them what in fact you have feed the poor dog and then jumped back to dog food. Sure they will tell you what would be best for your dog.
For one feeding any animal several different things and jumping around from one to another is not good for them. And dogs are much better off eating dog food not people food. But I would check with a Vet in case the different foods have in fact could have made the dog sick. |

Barley.... soaked and lightly boiled..(2 cups cooked)
meat...chicken necks.... lamb shanks..beef brisket...(double handful serve size) Vegetables....any left over from your meal. ( cup full) Kibble (half a cup) Feed this dog once a day.... in the morning. Then take him for a run every day... I bet he is bored... a highly trained dog would have had 'work' everyday. Let him run... chase balls.. whatever it is that gives him joy. |

well it is not my cooking..
and he did quit eating for a couple of days so i hand fed him. he liked that. what kind of worms? he did have stinky poop but then why would he eat it? my poop stinks too, and believe me i am not going to eat it no matter how hungry... |

first of all how old is he? Its natural for most pups to eat their pop and other dogs too!!! From experience, dogs will eat most any dog food when they get hungry enough

the dog is 13.....

I'm just guessing, but I would say a good cause could be separation anxiety. Find out what he used to eat and put it out for him at the same times they did. In a couple days he should come around. And yes, lots of exercise. And if he's a working dog, can you find something for him to do that would feel like his work? He might need to be productive.

Science Diet is good for the dog, a little pricey but they have many different types of food depending on dog. Alot of exercise is needed for the dog and for the eating of the poop, just keep the yard clean and don't let the dog eat anything while walking him.

Find a dog food he will like and stick with it.
If you keep changing his food, eventually he won't eat any of it. If change is necessary do so gradually. Home cooked food makes then finicky. They have sensitive digestive systems, if in doubt contact a vet. Routine is the key, have a regular feeding time and stick to it. For some reason they don't seem to know when they are full. That's what I did with my German Shepard. Good luck! |

now the dog has developed this sick habit, which includes eating his poop, and so he is full. he likes his poop better than my cooking i do believe. what to do about this... he is a seizure, narcotics, cadavier dog, and i think he is bored myself. any opinions? As sick as it sounds by human standards, it's actually a nutritious instinct, not much different than when they eat grass for a case of indigestion. Your dog isn't a human, even though you might think of him like one. |

um well nutritious or not, i put a stop to it by using "stop eating your poop" which i invented myself with a little gravel, and some rubberized poop which is hard to chew.
i got this idea from all the postings. and encouraging a dog to eat his poop, instead of my cooking put that person on my poop list whoever u r. fyi |
