I also apoligize for losing my temper. I take it personally due to serving 20 in the US Maine Corps. I hate it when people make slandering statements like that while they have no clue as to what they are talking about.

Just to be clear. There is a United States Naval base there and the detention facility. There is talk of shutting down the detention facility not the base.
Gitmo was/is an end run around existing treaties and U.S. law that requires certain criminal or military procedures to be followed after the arrest, apprehension or capture of individuals. The legally gray area Bush and company have used to detain these individuals without charge is as dangerous to freedom, liberty and all that Americans hold dear as those who engage in violent criminal terrorist acts. If these individuals are terrorists then charge them, try them and punish them. Whether it be with life imprisonment or the death penalty. (Personally I think death in some cases is too easy a punishment and also creates martyrs) Adherance to a higher standard, to the rule of law and to the dignity and highest aspirations of intelligent, fair and decent human beings should be what we always strive for. Uncover and expose the wrong doer and mete out the appropriate punishment but do not, as we have, lower our standards of behavior to that of our enemy. This country is suppose to be a country ruled by laws. Not madmen or by religious pronouncements of radicals who wish to kill....oh wait never mind. |

Perhaps you should review your history.
England, having been around much longer than the United States has had much more time to have both success and failures in her own back yard and around the world. Perhaps instead of taking time to call names and jump to what you clearly see as moral high ground you should break out some history books and review the past...lest you are doomed to repeat it. |
