Don't just straight up quit. That'll never work.
Just gradually smoke fewer and fewer cigs everyday. Eventually you'll break it. Promise |

I quit in Feb. of last year. Peppermints. I had 'em in my car, my locker at work, coat pocket, everywhere. They helped a lot!

Keep something like hard candy or gum to satisfy the need for something in your mouth. Especially for when you would normally have a smoke. Find something physical to relieve tension: exercise, walking, sex....
Good Luck!! |

I quit cold turkey 3 years ago! It's a mind thing. Some have the will power to quit all at once and some have to do it over time. As for things that help, well I replaced a cigarette in my mouth with strawberry twizzers! But I don't light them!

I've quit smoking and just wanted to know if any one had tips or tricks to help Before you quit; Realize that being a non-smoker is probably the most significant change you can make in your and your families over all health. It is the primary factor in keeping your children and grandchildren from smoking. It will also extend the life of your pets. See your doctor and tell him your plans. He can often tell you the most approriate for you way to aid your effort. His referral will often afford you a free or covered by insurance stop smoking program. He also may have free samples. Stop any smokeless tobacco. Substitute non-caffine drinks. You will suffer enough withdrawal without caffine headaches and poor sleep. Chart when you habitually smoke. Start replacement habits. Note any triggers such as stressful situations that make you want a smoke. Find a better way to cope. Purchase a calendar and chart your progress. Develope a hobby to keep your hands busy. Or carry a worry stone or coin to fiddle with. if you are prayerful a rosery or prayer chain. Buy a portable toothbrush. Brushing after meals helps you avoid after meal smokes. (Replace it once you actually quit. Cut back on as many cigareets as possible. Only buy a pack at a time and do not replace it until it is empty. Throw out all coupons ash trays, lighters, and smoking materials ect.. Only smoke outdoors alone standing. Do not make the smokeing spot an oasis. Where ever possible disassociate smoking with comfort. Buy new filters for car, furnace, and humidifiers, and your vacume. Be prepared to change your furnace filter weekly for the first 8 weeks. Have all out of season linens and clothes washed boxed or bagged. Once you have quit smoking indoors clean carpets, floor vents, curtains, venitians and windows. This is a good time to paint. (Habitat for Humanity Restores can save you a fortune on paint.) After you quit; Wash or replace your favorite hat and coat. Chances are if you are a long term smoker you will have saturated it and your favorite hats to the point you can not get the nicotene out. If it is too costly at least have it professionally cleaned. Or as a last resort stop wearing it until you are smoke free six months. Wash everything you can with household ammonia. It breaks down the micro dust of nicotene that is on everything. Have your vehicals extensively detailed or trade in for a new one. Bag your bed and bed pillow or replace it if you can. Pillows and Mattresses are loaded with skin cells that are loaded with nicotine. Wash your hair and hair tools frequently. Have your teeth professionally cleaned. Add more fluids to your diet and a multi-vitamin preferably bananas and green tea. It will cut back on leg gramps, nervouse stomache, and headache. Usually when you first stop smokeing you sigh and blink more. You may want eye drops. Avoid useing a mouthwash containing alcohol. It will give you heartburn when you are already susceptible. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT ignore sudden onset heartburn, chest tightness, or any other symptom that might be a heart attack. Smokers are a hot candidate for Heart attack, stroke, or asthma attacks; none of which you want to handle on your own. Sucking on pep-o-mints is ok but speariments will soothe the stomache better. If you have any diabetic issues frequently check your sugar levels. Chewing sugarless gum will spare your already compromised teeth. Keep in mind too much sobital frequently in sugar free candy/gum will give you diarreha. Each day you do not smoke give yourself a small reward. If you flub get right back on track. Anything that is worth doing takes effort and sometimes more than one try. GOOD LUCK |
