you might be able to live with one kidney but then you dont know if later on down the line if there is going to be a problem with that one
as we found out over 4yrs ago that my son only has one kidney. and he now is on dialysis after the life ordeal he went through the end of dec of 2007 when we almost lost him..

im also on dialyis have been for 3yrs but i also have had problem with my kidneys for over 25yrs they think longer

my son and i both have a birthdefect that causes issue with the kidneys

my mom is my donor.. but her age is the main factor so she really cant donate

well its too complex and the kidney foundation will no exactly. But what I do know is that you have to be at least the same race. Sad but true. My ex hubby was filipino, is on dialysis and I cannot donate because I am white.

I hope these issues become easier with time, and I wish you the best.
Perhaps your situation is a bit different though - it looks like there may be something genetic.

As for your mother, yesterday, I found a program that does something interesting:
If your mother is willing to donate a kidney in your name, I believe this organization will exchange that kidney for a compatible one. I hope this information can be of use to you.
Here's the link. Scroll down to the section called "Exchange Programs."

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE THE SAME RACE!!!
apparantly you do!!! Ive been in this circus before....

You don't have to be in the same race, but it makes it much easier to get a match that way. The closer the people are the more likely that are to match when it comes to race, nationality and things like that.

*huff* Has there been even one post that was on-topic? lol

Okay, hellkitten, I'm glad you'd donate to your family.

Would you be willing to tell us a bit about why you wouldn't sign-up as a Kidney donor? That is, why wouldn't you donate to someone outside the family?

Lemme re-post the question:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
What reasons are the *against* donating a kidney?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I listed 2 potential resons why not to. I think the reason more people are not posting reasons against is because we don't have enough knowledge of the subject.

I have registered for the organ donation program. We had a teen in our church with a rare leukemia and we had a blood drive. Many of us also tested to see if we were a match and were put in the system. That was several years ago, and she lived, when the chances for her were very, very low. I have never been called for kidney, marrow or anything else. If I am needed I will be available. There is no reason to withhold something that you can live without if it will save the life of another.

Bravo! Hearing this makes me happy.

As far as I know, registering to be an organ donor means you are willing, once dead, to have your organs harvested. Bone marrow and kidney donation, though, are separate things that you have to register for.

The reason for this is that there are plenty of people who are willing to donate their organs post mortem. However, for the same people, kidney, bone marrow, and blood donation may be another matter entirely.

You may want to double check, dear. I am very glad to hear you are willing to donate!!!

littleredhen:

Ah, I'm sorry, you are very right. To generalize, the two reasons were:

1) Perhaps one has illnesses that prevent donation.
2) Perhaps with such illnesses, even if donation was an option, donation might not be wise.

But these two reasons really boil down to the following reason:

--People do not know enough about being a kidney donor and do not look into the matter.. For this reason, they just aren't kidney donors.--

Well, maybe I should rephrase the question:

---> Let's say you knew that your kidney was viable for donation. Let's also say that you were advised that any condition you have now would not increase the risk of medical complications in the foreseeable future.

To those of you who would *not* donate, *what is your reasoning*?

have you donated a kidney yet? I mean damn... the only way for me to make you happy is to give someone a kidney! Leave my effin kidney alone. It's mine. I'll give it away if I feel like it. You feel free to give yours away.

No I am registered to be a live donor. If I am needed for bone marrow or say my extra kidney, then they will call me.

Not yet, but I'm going to.
I don't mind if you keep your kidney (it is a bigger commitment than the other options, I'd say), but you're right, when I hear someone is willing to make that commitment, I do feel happy.

...but that's not the only way to make me happy.smooched

oops

Seriously, though, I'm not trying to take your kidney, or trying to force you to give it away. If I had the power to make donating kidneys mandatory, I wouldn't.

But the fact that you are defensive about this makes you sound guilty about not donating. If that's true, maybe you'll feel better after signing up. ;-)
Or, if you've not done so already, register as an organ donor and as a bone marrow donor, and give blood when you can. If *everyone* did just that much, the organ shortage would be over and this discussion about kidneys wouldn't even be happening.
