I think I'll collect some of the info from this thread. After a time, I'll recreate the thread. I think it's good to promote awareness about these things. |

I have been a LifeLink speaker and RACE DOES NOT MATTER. Nor does being MIXED race. Matches are made on other criteria.

you might be able to live with one kidney but then you dont know if later on down the line if there is going to be a problem with that one as we found out over 4yrs ago that my son only has one kidney. and he now is on dialysis after the life ordeal he went through the end of dec of 2007 when we almost lost him.. im also on dialyis have been for 3yrs but i also have had problem with my kidneys for over 25yrs they think longer my son and i both have a birthdefect that causes issue with the kidneys my mom is my donor.. but her age is the main factor so she really cant donate well its too complex and the kidney foundation will no exactly. But what I do know is that you have to be at least the same race. Sad but true. My ex hubby was filipino, is on dialysis and I cannot donate because I am white.
I hope these issues become easier with time, and I wish you the best. Perhaps your situation is a bit different though - it looks like there may be something genetic. As for your mother, yesterday, I found a program that does something interesting: If your mother is willing to donate a kidney in your name, I believe this organization will exchange that kidney for a compatible one. I hope this information can be of use to you. Here's the link. Scroll down to the section called "Exchange Programs." YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE THE SAME RACE!!! I like circuses |

My father had kidney cancer, and I wanted to donate one of mine to him so bad. Unfortunatly the cancer had spread, and the doctors said it would do no good.
But I would totally donate a kidney to FAMILY only. |

*huff* Has there been even one post that was on-topic? lol
Okay, hellkitten, I'm glad you'd donate to your family. Would you be willing to tell us a bit about why you wouldn't sign-up as a Kidney donor? That is, why wouldn't you donate to someone outside the family? Lemme re-post the question: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> What reasons are the *against* donating a kidney? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> |

actually there doesn't really appear to be much interest in even a thread about it
kinda explains why there are thousands of people waiting for kidneys that never come? about 2000 people die every year waiting for a kidney |

Your first responsibility is to your kid. and the transplant surgery can be pretty hard on the donor That is one reason I won't allow any of the people asking to donate for me I'm just waiting for my name to come up on the road kill list |

I don't think that's selfish, kitty. Although the risk of giving a kidney is small, you got a kid to look out for!!
Of course, how would you feel in 20 years when your kid can take care of him/herself? quiet_2008, that's very considerate of you. I've been reading about the procedure, though, (I'm considering doing the transplant for a friend) and it doesn't sound so bad at all. Take a look: http://www.kidney.org/transplantation/livingDonors/infoQA.cfm?id=7 However, living without any kidneys is a terrible experience from my mom (an MD) experience, and life-expectancy and health are greatly affected. For your loved ones, watching you live a life with no kidneys may be far more painful that the trivial annoyances of being a donor - 4-6 days bed rest after the operation, avoiding heavy-contact sports, and getting urine checked once a year. |

I just saw this on the news:
A couple is divorcing. Earlier, the man had given his wife his second kidney. Now, they're going to court, and he wants his kidney back. It's one of those times where you laugh with an extremely disgusted look on your face. |

Stem cell research will lead us to mass organ production with perfect match each time. It's only a matter of time.
I want both of my kidneys just in case one fails me later in life. |

It's one of those times where you laugh with an extremely disgusted look on your face. actually he is using that as a tactic to force her to restore visitation with his children. I've noticed that most of the news sources are neglecting that fact (makes a more sensationalistic story) |

Oh, I know he can't be serious, but it's an asshole thing to do none-the-less.
If the lady is really being a jerk about visitation rights, though, I'd say it's justified, and pretty clever, actually. As for stem cell research...I'm just mad we've had to wait so long for it. Stupid Bush. I'm sure Obama will rescind that law. |

I have registered for the organ donation program. We had a teen in our church with a rare leukemia and we had a blood drive. Many of us also tested to see if we were a match and were put in the system. That was several years ago, and she lived, when the chances for her were very, very low. I have never been called for kidney, marrow or anything else. If I am needed I will be available. There is no reason to withhold something that you can live without if it will save the life of another.
