Frank, Sammy, and Dean were the core of the late '50s/early '60s confederation of showbiz friends known as the Rat Pack, but they weren't alone. Rat Pack category shows that Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford rounded out the Pack.

The Rat Pack had its roots in a group of Humphrey Bogart's friends, including Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and other Hollywood entertainers. After Bogie, Frank, and a couple of cronies returned home from a late night of carousing, Bogart's wife, actress Lauren Bacall, jokingly said: "You look like a rat pack!"

But the swingin', ring-a-ding Rat Pack that most people know was a creation of Frank Sinatra. He started the group with fellow singer-turned-actor Dean Martin, who Sinatra first performed with in the movie Some Come Running in 1958. They soon added singer/dancer/actor Sammy Davis Jr., actor Peter Lawford, and comedian Joey Bishop to the "Clan" (Sinatra's preferred name for the Rat Pack).

The Pack gained notoriety through their high-rolling antics, campaigning for John F. Kennedy's presidential election, and raucous Las Vegas stage shows. Particularly famous were the "Summit at the Sands" shows in 1960. They performed these shows at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Vegas while simultaneously filming one of the best Rat Pack movies, the original Ocean's Eleven.

While Sinatra, Martin, Davis, Lawford, and Bishop were the main Packers, the Pack included other hip, Hollywood types too. Shirley MacLaine is often considered the group's token lady, though Angie ****inson is often cited as the group's female chum. Juliet Prowse, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, Ava Gardner, and Kim Novak are frequently mentioned as other Rat Pack hangers-on. The Pack also had connections to the Kennedys through Peter Lawford, who was married to JFK's sister, Patricia. (This earned Lawford the nickname "Brother-in-Lawford" within the Pack). Even crime boss Sam Giancana is rumored to have been a pal of the Pack.

Currently, the only surviving member of the Rat Pack is Joey Bishop. The rest of those cool cats have gone to the great big lounge act in the sky.
