well personally i think it's a legit question. Some women and men do use
the word independent to mean"i'm gonna do what i want no matter what you think or feel" .That could also have been his experience with the independent word.Just tell him independent people, like countries, are willing to compromise, they just don't want to be annexed. Sometimes people ask questions based on their past experiences and we have to be tolerant of that somewhat. |

Independent? Yeah thats me! And not to be rude but i was a single
Mother of two. And i learned long ago that all my kids had to depend on was me! So i worked hard and raised them kids and didn't have to depend on no one else! So now it would be nice to not have to be so independent! And be able to lean on somebody a little bit and share my life. Until then friends and good times will work and i will be independent! lol! |

It doesn't bother me that a woman
is independent, as long as she is open to a relationship. What bugs me are the women who put in their profile that they must have someone who is 'financially independent' or 'financially stable'. What does that mean? Rich? I always think 'gold digger' when I read that. I'm a good person who has some credit card debt. I guess that would not make me financially independent, but I am worth getting to know and sometimes a great friend is worth more than all the money in the world. |

I think Jackie and mnhiker have made some interesting points. Webster
describes independant as: not requiring or relying on something else : not contingent <an independent conclusion> (2) : not looking to others for one's opinions or for guidance in conduct. I am perfectly happy with those descriptions and with that, I would consider myself as independent although my independence is a result of age inflicted attitude change. lol I havent always been independent. Raising three kids was the hardest thing I have ever done and I admit that even though the "blended family" situations were dismal failures, it was still nice to feel that at that time I wasn't going it alone. Some will describe themselves as independent when they are actually describing their shield used to keep people from getting too close which is a misrepresentation of the word and a sign for me to step on the long pedal on the right as quickly as possible. Been there, done that, no thank you. Tantalizing tulip, as I am sure you know, comprimise is important in a relationship but I think you read him wrong. Don't put his sophomoric comment on your plate. I think what he was more concerned with was that someone wouldn't see things HIS way. I might be off base- just my opinion. |
