I worked at a clinic in Denver, every two weeks was 'Russian Day' Only one translator, not good. So we have young Moms bringing in sick infants, can't even tell us what their own name is, let alone tell us whats going on with their child. I could not imagine that. So I bought a phrase book, took some night classes. Learned enough to make them feel welcomed, ask a few questions.

my grandmother's ancestors are from russia. she migrated with a gypsy caravan (nomad tribes of the southern reaches) down into iran. she was blond haired and blue eyed. she was also the last in the generations so speak any dialect of russian.
