Tomorrow I'm going to be meeting with a pediatric cardilogist and
surgeon on behalf of my adopted son with Down syndrome. It's been
suggested that he should have his two holes (ASD and PDA) closed this
year instead of next year. There are two ways it can be done either
through catherization or open heart surgery. This is not an easy
decision but I'm hoping for answers tomorrow.

My son's name is Noah and he is three years old. Thank you for the
prayers in advance!

Hi Mystique

Thoughts and prayers are with you and your son. I hope everything will
go well. Noah's name will be put on my prayer list.

Update... spoke to both the ped. cardiologist and the surgeon. The
surgeon was for his procedure.. open heart surgery because it's been
around a LONG time. You stitch the holes closed, but you do stop the
heart (that just scares the bleep out of me). Yet this surgeon has a
fantastic track record, never lost a patient on the table. There are
more risks since you are opening up the chest. He'd be in the hospital
two days. The surgeon, an older gentlemen, believes in what he does.
The young ped. cardiologist also believes in what he does but the
devices used to close the heart have only been FDA approved since 2001.
A nickel made device is inserted into the heart to close off the hole,
no chance of rejection... one day in the hospital, no opening in his
chest, but there are other risks like puncturing a vein or clotting of
the blood. The long term affects are unknown because it's new and
hasn't been done as long as the open heart surgery. I thought I'd have
answers and be able to make this horrendous choice for my son. I'm here
to say that I went there more open to catheterization, but came home
confused as heck. I was at least informed that we don't need to make a
decision right now. How on earth to you make a choice like this? It's
times like these you just wish God would inform you on what you are
suppose to do.

Myst - I'm sure many here have seen this, even if they haven't
responded, you and Noah will be thought of with concern and hope.

Remember one thing, no decision you make will be wrong. What you
decide, you do wo with love. Whatever the outcome, you have chosen with
your heart and sometimes that is the clearest any decision can be.

Be well and be strong and know you will choose correctly.
