I support the Kinga Freespirit Foundation in seeking to save slave children in Africa.

I traveled with Kinga Freespirit for several months over a couple of different occasions. She was a truly remarkable person. I miss her.

I also worked with Nhowe Mission in Zimbabwe to coordinate a US Center for Disease Control program designed to prevent HIV/AIDS transmission between mother and child during labor. As well as coordinating famine relief food distribution associated with US Agency for International Development. Among other things, I went over to Zimbabwe and South Africa to help them purchase 6 lorries for use in famine relief food distribution.

money to the march of dimes
and when my father died of cancer, in leiu of flowers we asked to donate to the ACS. (american cancer society)

But these days, it seems like where ever you go and buy something people are asking me if I want my coin change back or if I would like to donate it. Why do people make you feel guilty when you want your money back?

Some of these charity things are leaving a sour taste in my mouth.

We adopted a "local" family from the salvation army this christmas at my workplace. We each gave around 30 dollars, which may not seem like much, but when you are a single mom raising 2 kids, that could have been another present under my own tree.

When we got the packet detailing what to do, the salvation army had prompted the family to list some things they might like to have. We were told the parents were working parents who just didn't make quite enough to do christmas. The 2 year old boy we had no problem buying for, and he got everything on his list. The mom asked for kitchen items and bath and body products. The dad asked for Ohio State clothes and guess what???.......a gaming system. We were shocked that in hard times, when he wasn't able to provide for his family, that this is something he thought of. We decided not to buy this and got clothes for him and a couple of very sizeable gift cards to Kroger's and Walmart, for groceries and necessities.

When we dropped off the items to the salvation army we were asked not once but twice "Is this all?". Can you believe that? Every one of us donating has no clue if we will have a job in February (my day job is at an auto manufacturer) and yet we wanted to help someone else. We had gathered around 500 dollars for that family and were still made to feel it wasn't enough. It totaled more that I had spent on my own 2 kids.

Next year we will be picking another charity.

I agree, that was pretty rotten of them to ask "is that it?". They need to be thankful that anyone bought for their kids. I don't spend $500 for ALL gifts I buy at the holidays. Sounds a bit selfish/greedy to me.

As soon as I get a Saturday off, I'm going to the mall and buying some new clothes. I'm going to give all my old clothes to Planet Aide. I always donate money. I would like to donate time, and blood, and more.

I donate mostly to my local fire stations, EMS facilities, etc. They need the money since most of them are volunteer.

I also have done several fundraisers to help raise money for research for the syndrome my son was born with. Generally for my son's birthday, if anyone other than immediate family wants to get my son a gift, I ask them to make a donation to the Lowe Syndrome foundation to help find a cure for my son and all the boys who were born with his same syndrome.

nothing like a charity that does nothing for no one, which most of them are
