it's not how many hours you get but how much deep sleep you have, if I remember it is suppose to be that 2 or 3 hours of deep sleep is all we need.

Sleep usually goes in cycles (dozing, half awaken, deep sleep, half awaken, deep sleep ect) and even if you sleep 12 hours if its mostly half awaken sleep you'll feel tired anyway when you wake up.

Um, no, there has never been anything to suggest that all we need is 2-3 hours of sleep.

In fact, the research shows that all those years of saying 6 hours was enough was actually wrong and two generations of people have simply learned to function while sleep deprived. But usually some aspect of their life suffers for it.

People put their energy into work, but home suffers for it. People put their energy into home, but work suffers for it.
People put their energy into both, but then don't take proper care of themselves.

People 2-3 hours of sleep isn't sufficient for propers health maintenance of the body. Nor for proper weight maintenance. That short of time doesn't lead to the proper depth and length of REM cycles for them to go their job properly in regards to mental state and whatever other functions they influence that are still hard to define. But studies seem to indicate are needed.

not 2 or 3 hours of sleep but of deep sleep in a regular 8 hour sleep you only get 2 to 3 hours of deep sleep the rest are other stages in the sleep cycle.

Is crabbiness a symptom? If so, you need more sleep. Preferably some deep REM.

Sleep stages

# Stage 1 (Drowsiness) - Stage 1 lasts just five or ten minutes. Eyes move slowly under the eyelids, muscle activity slows down, and you are easily awakened.

# Stage 2 (Light Sleep) - Eye movements stop, heart rate slows, and body temperature decreases.

# Stages 3 & 4 (Deep Sleep) - You’re difficult to awaken, and if you are awakened, you do not adjust immediately and often feel groggy and disoriented for several minutes. Deep sleep allows the brain to go on a little vacation needed to restore the energy we expend during our waking hours. Blood flow decreases to the brain in this stage, and redirects itself towards the muscles, restoring physical energy. Research also shows that immune functions increase during deep sleep.

# REM sleep (Dream Sleep) – At about 70 to 90 minutes into your sleep cycle, you enter REM sleep. You usually have three to five REM episodes per night. This stage is associated with processing emotions, retaining memories and relieving stress. Breathing is rapid, irregular and shallow, the heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, males may have penile erections, and females may have clitoral enlargement.

I generally sleep 6 hours, and I usually go to bed between midnight and 3am because I can.
