I was a child in the 60s. Far different than the 70's or 80s. Therefore for myself and many other kids of that time we obeyed out of fear.

My answer exactly.

My dad had a saying
You had better respect your elders and if you don't you had better pretend well enough I believe you.

I love that one! LMAO

I often feel bad to witness the relationships that so many of my friends have with thier parents and family.

I was raised with very strict disciplinary standards...(My Father owned a Kyokushinkai Dojo for 22 years)

Yet, I was given complete freedom of individuality..(as only a kung fu biker Dad could give)

Believe me...when Dad needed to whip my @ss, he did. Yet I never went a day without being loved.

As far as I am concerned...I was raised with a great balance of love, respect and fear...they all have thier place.

Edit: That leather jacket my dad is wearing from that picture in 1965.....I have today and it fits awesomely!!!!

We were taught to respect our elders and if we failed there were no words to straighten us out, we were spoke to with the belt.

I lived with respect of my folks and grandparents. But, I knew if I did something wrong I would pay for it.

Absolutely, I always knew I was loved and adored. I was spoiled rotten by my maternal grandparents but my parents were very black and white. I also will admit I raised my children pretty much the same way. I have 4 children and 3 of them are fantastic adults. The youngest was raised with more grey due to outside factors he is 25 and I am still waiting for him to grow up and realize this world doesn't owe him.

I never wanted to see my Mom cry......that happened once when I was 14, disrespected her and talked back, and I never wanted to see that look in her eyes again.

I don't regret anything nor hold anything against my parents for the way I was raised. It did teach me respect and values. While I never went to the same extremes with my sons as my parents did with us kids I did discipline them. When my parents would tell me "this is going to hurt me more than it will you" I know now what they meant. It broke my heart everytime I had to discipline my sons. But both of them are well respected by their peers.

I grew up with a sociopsychotic mother who believes in true dictatorship over childrens lives. You may have seen her on the old TV series 'Batman' as the character 'The Meddler'. If she had her way I'd still be under her control, still be wearing plaid, granny glasses, bowl haircut, pocket protector, working as a dentist assistant and being browbeaten for her dillusional unobtainable expectations of me. Her psychological and physical abuse ended when I was 13. She went to backhand me across the face and I caught her arm mid swing and I said "Not anymore. I'm an adult. Not a child". And I left. Times change. People change. Gotta great relationship.

I was forced to grow up fast because of those exhorbitant unobtainable expectations my mother had. Kinda took a dent out of my childhood. Still love her. Kinda part of what made me- well uh me!
