He is crate trained but only to sleep in the crate at night. He has never used the bathroom in his crate and cries when he needs to go out in the morning. He is like my alarm clock.

He goes in the house at random times and only pee he never poops in the house anymore. He has even peed in the house right after going out for a walk. I am thinking maybe he is getting tooooo much water. I read online that I should only feed and water him 3 times a day for 15minutes ?

Lately he has started peeing in the bed and when he is asleep on peoples lap. Kind of like he is just to lazy or comfortable to get up or let me know he needs to go so he just pees right there and never gets up.

Don't with hold water. I'd see a vet he may have a genetic problem, some kind of kidney damage, or an infection.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

The tapeworm has been taken care of and my little guy is in excellent health.

Now if I could just get him housebroken. I had no idea daschunds were so stuborn. whoa

My brother has one (daschund), he always thought of the carpet as grass. So he would go on it. When my brother moved, his house has hardwood floors and then the dog started holding it to go outside. It was weird.

Who really knows what goes on in thier little minds? My rat terrier was confused when we were in the desert, she was looking for grass & seemed afraid to pee in the sand.

laugh Very cute, but I do often what goes through their minds.bigsmile

Hmmmmmm did the vet check for kidney or bladder problems? Have you asked the breeder about any problems in his bloodlines? I do not know much about what problems are common specifically in dachsunds. A reputable breeder would.

I'm surfing about dachshunds. Apparently they are known to be harder to housebreak than most breeds.

"Housebreaking. As a behavioral consultant, I would put the Dachshund on my Top 20 List of "Hard to Housebreak." Consistent crate training is mandatory. Sometimes a doggy door is necessary. And some owners never do get their Dachshunds fully housebroken."

My brother has a red nose pit and he is an extremely intelligent dog. Not nearly as adorable as my little daschund though.

I read that also. They are also destructive and agressive. I'm not sure what exactly hes got going in his favor other than being so darn adorable.

Oh he is adorable! happy

Please don't take offense, but did you check out the breed before you chose him, or did the cute get to you? The breeder should have educated you a bit. All breeds have thier stregths & weaknesses, A good breeder would help you decide if thier breed suits you.

The site I posted has a list of some good points about dauchsunds too.

I actually did not pick him out or choose the breed. My StepBrother bought the dog for my StepFather and the dog chose me to be his Mommy. So I am dealing with everything while everyone else who made the decision to purchase him when I wasn't even there gives him an occasional petting.
I spoke with the breeder when I first got him about what to feed him and also house breaking him. They initially told me he ate Purina Puppy Chow but after I bought a bag he refused to eat it and would only bark at it and push it out of his bowl. They also told me he was trained to sleep in his crate and he is. When he first came home he didn't use the bathroom in the house for about 2 weeks and then he started pooping behind my Moms bed. Now he stopped pooping inside and has started peeing everywhere just randomly. Maybe I should call the breeder again.

Laughing at the picture of him barking at his food! Once when I was very broke, I had to mix chicken scraps & rice in with my dogs regular food to stretch it. The next time she was faced with a bowl of plain dry food she refused to eat it. She stared at the bowl, then at me & eventually walked away. Later she picked out 1 piece & spit out out on the sfa next to me! Plain as day she was saying, "you don't really expect me to EAT this crap do you?" My roommate& I laughed until we cried! After about 5 hours she got hungry & ate it.

Hehee that is so cute. My guy is a little bit of a picky eater when it comes to dog food he will only eat kibbles and bits but if he finds anything non-edible on the floor all bets are off and he will try his best to eat it. I had to stick my fingers in his mouth a couple of times to fish out random things like a bingo ball. I've learned now that nothing on the floor or within his reach is safe. He has also learned to push the button on my printer to make the paper come out so he can reach it and tear it to bits all over the house.

Ok I'd start over with the house breaking. Go to the librairy or online & read about crate training & housebreaking. It takes a lot of patience & someone has to be home with the dog a lot. There has to be consistency. I was able to take Olive to work with me most days while I was training her, & I had a nieghbor that would take her out if I had to leave her home. At 5 months maybe he just can't hold it for 8 hours yet. I think Duffy suggested 4 & that sounds reasonable to expect for starters. You should make sure all the carpets & floors are really clean, & He is not out of your sight to have an oppourtunity to have an accident. If he starts sniffing around, take him out. Puppies are a lot of work.

Dragging their butt on the floor means that their anal glands need to be drained. I've had dogs do that before - even puppies. They need to go to the vet for that.

Ewwww... that doesn't sound good. Poor guy I guess i'll have to take him to the vet. I wish the holidays didn't totally mess up my cash flow, I wouldve taken him sooner. I was hoping I could just take care of him until after the first of the year.

Hi Brandy! Long time no see.....you can take your dog to any groomer and they will bathe and drain the anal glands. It smells really bad so be lucky it isn't something you can do, hahah.

I used to groom dogs for a couple of years and the expressing of anal glands was manditory unless I was told not to. Find a nice groomer and ask if they do it. Some won't. May save you money, as the vets are expensive I know.

My little Charlie is 1/2 dauchund 1/2 chiuaua. There is a pic of him in my profile. He is the blond one. He is very excitable and agressive. Great personality but there seems to be a short curcuit in his lil head.

He is good at figuring out how to jump up and get my hats off the wall, climb up and drag things from high places, and more, but if I want to teach him something, no go. Stubborn or stupid....I haven't figured it out quite yet. He is only 6 mo old, so we'll have to wait and see.

Smart as a whip. He has a fetish for my underwear, bra's hats, etc....He doesn't tear them up, just drags them around and takes them outside where all the stickers get into them. God help me when I go back to school.

I know he does this when I leave cuz he's mad that I left him behind, but I can't crate him. I can't afford a crate and he is so good about going outside. I don't want to train him to poop or pee in a cage.

He actually ruined and chewed up my best bra for the 1st time. I was livid. They were also bred to dig, and be very intelligent yet stubborn. They were bred in Germany to track and dig out badgers and other vermin. So I have to watch the yard carefully.

One thing I can say is the he has never once peed or pooped in the house. He has always used the dog door even when he fit in the palm of my hand.

I think the breeder had the pups follow her out the door to go to the bathroom. That is the only thing I can imagine since Ive never had a pup I didn't have to train. Good luck.....Karen
