Jazz clubs, comedy clubs, anything with live music or entertainment is good. Poetry clubs or something like that will work well if you want to date a classy girl.

You can talk while they are playing and the show can cover up those awkward moments of silence.

Never take them to a movie, sitting 2 hours in silence with a stranger just wont lead anywhere.

For followup dates you should pay attention to the girl and remember what she likes then search for areas around you that fit her needs and that she may not have gone to.

This is a hard question to answer, because all girls are different. Not all of them like the "dinner and a movie" and not all of them like bowling. It just depends on the girl and what she likes to do. Now, on the double date thing...I have had up and down experiences with that. Sometimes a girl will see that as in insecurity, and other times, they would rather do it that way. You know the best idea for a first date? Brainstorm together. Good luck, buddy.

Clubs are too impersonal. This is a first date and you want to get to know each other. A nice restaurant at a cozy table for two! The movies would be nice, but it's kinda hard to talk there, unless you went to eat before or after the movie. A romantic comedy would be best.

What is there to do around where you live?

Im in SoCal right now and there are tons of options for a great first date.

My first date would be to the Stone Brewery for a romantic dinner by the fire on the patio, then maybe a nice drive through the mountains and over to the beach for a nice walk and some conversation and then there are plenty of chill dive bars by the beach to finish the night.

Thats just one idea. There's Seaworld right down town, the Gaslamp district, Pacific Beach, Balboa Park.
Tons of options here in San Diego.

Find out what there is to do near you. And ummm go do it.

edit: You're in Cleveland right? I hear you guys have a cool scene on the waterfront, and there is the friggin Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...

Ice skating, museum (any type), a play, ice fishing, winter snow festival.

Go to your community web page for the city you live in and click on a link that will show you upcoming events. You should find lots of ideas for dates that might be things that neither of you have tried.
