Is science a religion for some people? What does that even mean?

I've heard some say secularism is a religion, even more absurd.

I guess first I would need to define the term "religion". I heard someone say that "science is a religion for some people". I'm not sure what that means.

Pretty much only religious fanatics say that science is a religion for other people.

Well, then that would make sense as far as who I heard this from.

Particularly from this group. I learn a lot from lurking, but I don't ask questions.

Traditionally, the term "religion" always includes "worship of god". Most dictionaries will include that phrase in their most common definitions. But thre are also definitions that mean simply "a strongly held belief, without evidential proof".

So I think it is perfectly valid to refer to science as a religion in some cases. Some people firmly believe whatever any scientist tells them, without examining it. And when challeneged, they simply state "science has proved it." This is particularly evident when the "scientist" is a charlatan with the sole intent to deceive for the purposes of personal gain. In that sense, one could almost call science a "cult".

religion and science are two methods of acquiring knowledge.
one consists of believing something is true simply because its what other people say to be true... and the other consists believing something to be true based on evidence.

Example:

Religion:
I believe the earth is the centre of the galaxy and the sun revolves around it because thats what i have been told and i have faith despite any evidence to the contrary.

Science:
I believe the sun is the centre of the galaxy and that the earth and other planets revolve around it because of evidenciary support of satellite imagery, telescopes, etc etc.

science, like math, leads to concrete answers. proven facts that require little faith.

religion requires faith and does not always lead us down a clear path.

I think that's probably what this person was referring to. People who believe nothing except what science tell them. People who would deny what they see with their own eyes if science tells them it is not there.

It's hard to say because this person is VERY religious so I'm not sure if that's what they meant or not.

i thought it depended on HOW it was conceived.

For those who believe the universe is God, it makes sense for science to be a religion.

Of course, anyone who believe that God created the universe should be interested in studying God's creation you'd think.

People who argue against science in favor of mythology have got to be nuts. The universe was clearly created by God (if you believe in a God). But it's not clear at all that any mythology was ever written by God. On the contrary most mythologies clearly appear to have been written by supersitious men who had agendas.

If God wrote anything, it's the universe.

If a mythology says one thing, and the universe say something different, you can bet your bottom dollar that the universe is right.
