I've never been alone at the holidays....can't imagine how I'd feel (though there are many times I'd love not to have my kids around....) Any way, I guess it must be hard, especially when most everyone else has plans. There's always lots of soup kitchen/homeless shelters that need help before, during & after the holidays. I used to take the kids when they were little to help serve meals. I agree with sweethouston, you get a lot back when you do for others & this might be an option. Hope this helps.

I miss the holidays when I was married. Each Thanksgiving and Christmas morning I'd get up at the crack of dawn to put the turkey on. Invariably, every year I had not allowed enough time for the turkey to thaw enough for me to get the gizzards, liver and neck out of it. I always had to wake my then husband to help. I remember he and I standing at the sink running water over the turkey, he in his jeans he pulled on hastily, tossled hair, mostly still asleep, tugging at the turkey to release the insides, a bit irritated at me, but knows he better keep it to himself or I will opem the back door and toss the turkey out and no one will be eating turkey!

For years, out of longing for what used to be I haven't put up a tree, put up lights, set out decorations. This year, I've decided to embrace it, and dust off all the boxes marked 'Holiday Stuff' and drag them from way back of my storage closet and set them out and...make some new memories...

Trust me on this one. At this point, I despise the holidays. I have for the last few years.

I can usually deal with the lonely empty times..but the holidays just seem to get me every year.

So beautifuly put and so true. Making new memories is the key. Have a party, go sing to the neighbors, have a luxury day of bubble bath, doing your nails, dressing to the nines, and go for a drive to a nice buffet somewhere. If you can invite company to your house. I guarantee there is a foster kid, and elderly neighbor, or a pregnant woman who would be glad for a visit away from whereever they are even if it is McDonalds.
