Is it possible for people of TOTAL opposite political views be true Friends.....

If so Why...

I am trying really hard to stick with topics & not be sarcastic but I just can't seem to help myself when people use the cop out excuses to avoid the facts.

It's not personal though...why should it be? I don't know these people.

I have friends who have vastly different political beliefs.

I love them because they all share a couple things. Across the board they are intelligent, committed, respectful, decent and human.

Oh and all save one loves beer. She's a Mormon and doesn't drink.

Some of my friends and I usually don't talk politics for various reasons. But, many of us, though not sharing the same views can still share a friendly debate without resulting to name calling

...sometimes anyways...bigsmile

The trick is to remember that if we all had the same beliefs we'd not only bore one another but we wouldn't challenge eachother either.

I'm an Independent who tends to vote Democrat.

My ma's a Republican who always votes Republican.

I still love my ma, even if we sometimes disagree.

Yes, blood IS thicker than water.

My best friend of the last 35 years is about as die-hard conservative Republican as you can get. I trust her with my life, we share everything. We talk about everything, including politics and religion. We disagree a lot but you know what, it doesn't matter because we RESPECT each other. We can disagree without resorting to name calling, sarcasm, and meanness. Why? Because we both realize that despite our differences, we're both human with much more in common than in difference. flowerforyou

I haven't been in posts for awhile due to my schedule... passing through, couldn't resist this one.
I have a few friends that are totally on different view points politically than I am.

Most of them non-issues.

One in particular I can not discuss politics with for the sheer fact she did not stand behind the candidate she did for her own personal reasons but for her 'grandfathers' reasons. He is a politician/lobbyist. And she made her choice for presidential elect by who his party was.

After 2 or 3 conversations with her on why she was choosing this elect it was clear she had no idea why she was choosing this candidate and I was losing respect for her.
So yea, this election meant a great deal to me,
So I made a decision for the sake of our friendship to not discuss this with her.

:/ still a lil peeved she was riding a coat tail on her choice and not choosing by her own knowledge of the candidate. :/

That's unfortunately all too common. Most people do not question what they are taught growing up and most everyone should. Not to necessarily change things, but to understand themselves better. Only if we question our own belief system and how and why it was formed can we continue to grow as people.

all my friends have differing political views..yet we can discuss our points of views without resorting to the insults and name calling that goes on around here...why?

well, first because they are my friends and I respect their opinions and vice-a-versa. (I dont give a rats a$$ what people here think about me)

second, because we are neither concerned with changing what the other person believes in, needing to be right or having to have the last word...which, in my opinion is about the only reason a handful of people (you know who you are  ) post what they do in these forums.

Of course it's possible...

I will admit most of my family and friends are republicans. I am registered as a republican, but tend to vote independent. My ballots usually involve republican and democrats. I TRY to look at issues, and policies and ignore parties... As a result i also try to convince my family and friends to do so whenever we discuss politics.

Sometimes discussing opposing views can keep people unbiased...

I agree, but only if you and they are willing to keep an open mind. If you can talk and learn, you never know what will happen, you might just find out that people aren't as different as the media and political parties would have us believe. I think people are much closer in what they think about government and politics than they realize and if they could put aside labels, people might get pleasantly surprised.

Yes, of course it's possible. While most of my friends are fairly liberal, there are a few who are pretty conservative.

I believe you to be absolutely correct on this...

Look at all the people that like Ron Paul's views for instance. Liberal, democrat, republican, independent, etc. all seemed to agree with what he says for at least the most part.

When people see or hear a good thing they usually know it. The problem is that we have been stuck with some really bad choices. Then those labels you spoke of are used to divide the population into two oppposing sides, arguing which philosophy is the worst evil...

Some people can discuss their views while keeping an open mind. It just doesn't happen with many on here .
